MOSCOW, May 8 (RIA Novosti) - Iran has developed a unique minesweeping system, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said on Wednesday, Press TV reported.
With the new system in place, special helicopter units can go into action to defuse and clear sea mines, he said during an ongoing minesweeping drill in the country’s southern waters where the new system was launched.
The Iranian Navy fully monitors the movements of all foreign forces in the region and is ready to counter any threats against the country, he added.
Sayyari announced the upcoming launch of the system on Saturday, shortly after the United States announced plans to conduct allied mine sweeping exercises in the region.
"As Americans have declared, they plan to carry out joint mine sweeping drills with some 30 countries,” he was quoted by the Fars new agency as saying, adding that those measures were part of their “Iranophobia.”
Last month, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi said Tehran is ready to share its mine-sweeping expertise with other countries in conducting mine-sweeping operations following “the excessive use of mines and cluster bombs by Saddam’s military forces” during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war.

Iranian Navy Tests Home-Made Minesweeping System

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian Navy staged a special minesweeping operation in Iran's Southern waters, during which it unveiled and started using the country's first home-made minesweeping system.

According to FNA dispatches, the special minesweeping operation was conducted in waters East of the strategic Strait of Hormuz this morning with Army Commander Major General Ataollah Salehi and Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari in attendance.

During the operation, the Navy started using a newly built advanced minesweeping system, and navy choppers successfully defused mines using the home-made system.

Now, Iran is among the few world countries with advanced minesweeping capabilities.

Last month, Sayyari had announced that his forces plan to put into operation a new warship and display a minesweeping system.

"In the month of Ordibehesht (April 21 - May 21) Bayandor warship, which is equipped with new and advanced tools and systems, will be put into operation and also the Navy's minesweeping system will be unveiled," Sayyari told reporters on the sidelines of the military parades held in Tehran on the occasion of the National Army Day.

Also in April, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi announced Tehran's readiness to share its minesweeping experiences and expertise with other countries on humanitarian grounds.

He noted that Iran sustained heavy damages during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war due to excessive use of mines and cluster bombs by Saddam's military forces, and said that the Iranian minesweeping experts are prepared to provide assistance to other countries in mine-sweeping area.
