TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran said on Wednesday it would use "all our means" to defend itself if attacked by the West, three days after France's foreign minister publicly raised the possibility of war over Tehran's disputed nuclear activities

When asked whether Iran would block the Hormuz Strait, the world's most important water way for oil shipments, if attacked, government spokesman Gholamhossein Elham dismissed it as "far- fetched" that anybody would take "this foolish option."

But, "we would use all our means to defend ourselves because territorial integrity is a key issue for every country," he told a news conference.

He did not elaborate. Iran has previously threatened to hit U.S. regional interests if the United States launches a military strike against the Islamic Republic.

The world's fourth-largest crude producer, which rejects Western accusations it is seeking to develop nuclear bombs, has also said it will not rule out using oil as a weapon if attacked.

Analysts fear Iran could seek to impede traffic through the Strait of Hormuz in any retaliation by threatening merchant shipping. U.S. naval chiefs are concerned that Iran could resort to mining the strait and the wider Gulf in a major conflict.

The strategic sea channel which shares Iran's coastline at the entrance to the Gulf is a choke point because of the huge volume of oil exported through it daily.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Tuesday comments by French government officials talking about the possibility of war over Iran's nuclear programme were intended for the media and should not be taken seriously.

.
Iranians cant hope to stand up to USA in a head on head conflict. Their biggest weapon is oil. By threatening to block oil, they r threatening to bring the US economy to a standstill, which will cost hundreds of billions of dollars.

USA better have a way of preventing iran mining the Hormuz strait if they plan to invade

.
iran cannot afford to stop selling oil to the US. It will crush their economy completely.

But if they know that their economy will get crushed by war anyway, they would wanna hurt USA as much as possible.

.
it will not only hurt the economy of the two countries but hurt the global economy.Oil prices will sprint up all over the world.

Nothing to lose? The only thing keeping Iran afloat is the oil. If that also stops the Iranians will literally starve.

All means huh! Well if any other country would be attacked they would have used only half-means to defend themselves or no means at all! Whats new? Don't kid me! The setting the sea on fire comments by Khamenei sounded better or the punching comment by the revolutionary guards sounded better!;)

Why is all the news about Iran that comes here very similar to others?

.
iranians are very powerful
don't forget russia is backing iran

.
US wouldn't attack iran and stop believing everything that's on internet.

. .
Even a short lived war over Iran will not help US interests..the oil price will surge to $200/bbl

An offensive against Iran, at this stage, will not garner much support amongst the American populace or their European allies. With the political situation in the US (Democrat POTUS and Conservative majority), it would take something alarming from Iran for there to be any consensus on war. Something like a nuclear weapons test or an unprovoked attack on Israel or something of that sort would do the trick, but minor arrests will not. If the US goes into Iran, it will have to be another long, drawn out campaign starting with a bloody campaign and regime change, something the Americans don't have the stomach for anymore.

But, one would never expect anyone other than "all means" to defend themselves from Iran.

Edit
By the way, Iran is a growing supplier of Natural Gas for Europe. Regardless of war, Europe needs its gas, and currently 30-40% of their gas comes from Russia. For the purposes of diversification, it will not be in the best interest of many European nations to go to war with Iran.
