TEHRAN, May 24 (MNA) – Iran and Indonesia have held new round of talks to commission building of 48 power plants in the Southeast Asian country.
Iran’s Minister of Energy Hamid Chitchian and Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Sofyan Djalil hosted a conference in Tehran where they agreed on building of 48 small-scale hydroelectric power plants; the main contractor of the projects will be Iranian companies.
Chitchian pointed to ‘excellent capacities’ of Iran and Indonesia to improve bilateral ties; “Relation with Islamic countries is a foreign policy priority for the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Indonesian energy delegation visit to Tehran provides good opportunities accordingly,” he told the meeting.
“Characteristic feature of both countries especially huge population provides a great market as grounds for joint cooperation; these markets could operate complementary to each other,” said the energy minister. “Both countries hail boosting bilateral ties; however a general lack of knowledge of both side’s capabilities exists, and we believe mutual visits by businessmen and traders would help them have a preliminary knowledge of the environment in both sides,” Chitchian asserted.
“Iranian power plant companies, whose technical capabilities are internationally competitive, could help Indonesia in building power plants; currently, 11,700mW of hydroelectricity is distributed in national grid, which indicate the capabilities necessary for cooperation with Indonesian government to that end,” he proposed.
Djalil, for his part, told the meeting that despite economic sanctions, Iran had made huge advances; “the Indonesian delegation of traders and economic experts is in Tehran to attend the 11th Iran-Indonesia joint economic commission; the banking problems pose the greatest barrier in the way of improving the trade ties,” said Mr. Djalil. “Indonesia plans to commission and build 48 power plants in line with climatic changes in the country; similarly, the country would commission small-scale hydroelectric power plants with 1-10mW capacity range; Iranian contractors would be of great help in Indonesian electricity market in this specific activity,” he added.
