BEIRUT: An Iranian official said on Friday during a visit to Beirut that his country wants good relations with its Middle East neighbors, especially regional rival Saudi Arabia.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi, who heads the Iranian Parliament’s national security and foreign policy committee, told reporters after meeting with Lebanon’s Prime Minister Tammam Salam that they discussed “the latest developments in Saudi Arabia.”

Boroujerdi was referring to the death last week of Saudi King Abdullah.

“Iran’s long-term policy is essentially based on establishing the best of brotherly relations with countries in the region, especially Saudi Arabia,” Boroujerdi told reporters.

“We believe that the more that countries in the region consolidate and strengthen their relations, the more we can establish security and stability,” said Boroujerdi.

Iranian-Saudi relations have been strained since Iran’s 1979 revolution. Boroujerdi was in Beirut to take part in a Hezbollah event on Friday honoring Lebanese fighters and an Iranian official killed on Jan. 18 in an Israeli air strike in southern Syria.

Tehran-backed Hezbollah has sent thousands of its troops into Syria to back President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Saudi Arabia is a main backer of the Sunni-dominated rebellion seeking Assad’s ouster.

On Thursday evening, Beirut-based Mayadeen television channel said Iran’s elite Quds Force commander Qassem Suleimani visited Beirut 24 hours after the fighters were killed in Syria.

During his visit, the shadowy commander had met with Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah and visited the home of Jihad Mughniyeh, one of the fighters killed in the Israeli strike.

On Wednesday, Hezbollah fighters in south Lebanon fired missiles that killed two Israeli soldiers in the occupied Shebaa Farms in the border region.

A Spanish UN peacekeeper was also killed, as Israel and Hezbollah exchanged artillery fire, the most serious clashes between the bitter enemies in years.

The Farsis can stick to Afghanistan and Tajikistan. We want nothing to do with them and their fake wannabe Arab Mullah's and Wilayat al-Faqih nonsense. Most of the 450 million Arabs are of the exact same opinion.

Anyone trying to improve the ties is wasting his time and I would almost argue that such a person is a traitor.

why is it not possible to mend the relations?

It is same old story Ajam vs Arabs. Old habits just dont die and when you as rigid and racist as Arabs and Persians it is next to impossible. Sometimes I laugh at them that with so much oil and gas wealth it is more a curse for Arabs or Persians than blessing because they are using that money to F** each other apart. They are basically doing Jewish job for Jews. One thing is for sure if they dont use their tiny brains their Mutual Assured Destruction MAD is inevitable.

Why don't you Pakistanis and Indians make up as well? You are arguably even more similar yet conflicts between you have lasted longer and been more deadly. You even mostly speak the same language (Urdu & Hindi).

Standard procedure. Relations should be cut. It's a waste of time.

Iranian establishment want the New Saudi King to follow the same policy which was adopted by Late King Abdullah.

Saudis have placed security survelliance system along the Saudi-Iraq Borders and IS did tried carried out attacks on the Saudi-Iraq Border.

Debbie Downer.

You have to agree. Just look at this forum or others if you were ever in doubt. Most Sunni Arabs and Persians cannot be genuine friends. Hell there is even trouble between Shia Arabs and Persians.

Arabs don't have any problems with Azeris, Iranian Arabs, Baloch, Turkmen, Kurds (only the Syrians and Iraqis have) etc. Which is even evident on this forum.

It's a racial/cultural thing. An ancient rivalry. Religion is just used as fuel.

why is it not possible to mend the relations?

It's like trying to make Japanse and Chinese best friends, Turks and Kurds, Russians and Poles, Israelis and Arabs, Indians and Pakistanis, Indians and Chinese, Armenians and Turks, Armenians and Azeris, Pashtuns and Tajiks, Hutus and Tutsis etc. The list is endless.

No need to waste your time. There should be no relations. Maybe this way the two sides can then leave each other alone. Arabs should be banned from traveling to Iran and Iranians should be banned from traveling to any Arab country. Simple as that. Heavy penalties for anyone breaking such a rule.

Lolz!! Learn about subcontinent partition first, and what Pakistan stands for. Our divide with Indians is on Kashmir as dispute and ideological difference that emerged after partition. Other than that most of Indians and Pakistanis go along well. In your case you both follow same religion. Their aint border disputes other than you can arabian gulf and the latter as persian gulf. What else? As I said your dispute is centuries and based on racial supremacy and language Persians vs Arabs.

Arabs and Persians can never truly be genuine friends. It's as simple as that. I don't care about exceptions here. I am talking in general. Be it on a governmental level or human to human level. Again I am talking about the majority here.

Yes, Pakistanis and Indians love each other. I have seen that on PDF and in person.

If religion is used as fuel then why don't the Saudis hate America, they are Christians. Also, why don't they hate France, Britain, Germany, I mean these guys ancestors started the Crusades.
