Iran says won’t rush to recognize Taliban


TEHRAN — Speaking at his weekly press briefing on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh reiterated that Iran seeks the establishment of an “inclusive” government in Afghanistan, and is ready to facilitate intra-Afghan talks.

He added that what the Leader of the Islamic Revolution said about Afghanistan has been Iran's firm policy on the country over the past 40 years.

“We have always stood by the people of Afghanistan and our priority has been to ensure peace, stability and progress in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is our dear neighbor. It is in our realm of civilization, and a statement I read at the ministry last week emphasized that the lives, honor, and properties of the Afghan people must be respected by all groups in the country. What we think will bring peace and stability to Afghanistan is the formation of an inclusive government in this country that reflects the ethnic and demographic composition of Afghanistan,” he elaborated.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on August 29 that the Islamic Republic backs the people of Afghanistan regardless of who is in power.

Ayatollah Khamenei wished peace and prosperity for the Afghan nation, saying, “May God bring the best situation for the nation of Afghanistan.”

The Leader described Afghanistan as a brotherly country which shares many affinities with the Iranian nation.

“Afghanistan is our brother country, with the same language, religion, and culture,” the Leader noted.

Khatibzadeh added, “In this regard, the responsibility of the future government of Afghanistan will help fulfill their definite obligations, and we are waiting to see the formation of an inclusive government and the commitment of that government to fulfill its responsibilities, and based on that, Iran and the international community will make their decisions.”

The spokesman said that what Iran seeks is that Afghans decide for their future.

“What is clear from the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which I have read before, is that we seek the people of Afghanistan to decide their own destiny, and no force outside Afghanistan can decide for the people of Afghanistan and their future. Afghanistan should be allowed to create an inclusive government in the country by facilitating inter-Afghan dialogue, not a minority government against the majority or a government with only one group, but a government that reflects the demographic and ethnic composition of Afghanistan,” he elaborated.

Khatibzadeh said that the Taliban, as a group, is part of Afghanistan and part of the future of the country.

I told people here that Iranian resistance axis media is inciting against the Taliban and their Arabic channels/social media profiles and that Iran will not recognize the Taliban. Taliban victory is not in favor of Iran's strategic interests. Yet Iranian regime says it wants to 'help' oppressed people. We all know that is not true.

No It's for the Afghans to decide who shall rule them, and it would seem the gave the Taliban (the previous legitimate government) a far greater standing ovation than last time. Pakistan only issue was the flooding of would be refugees. Since we housed up to 6 million at its peak and that they have been detrimental to our national security and economic prospect, it would seem a 'civil war' has been reverted*, which is good news. Furthermore the ousted foreign backed Kabul regime was no friend of Pakistan, India was given a free hand to stage terrorist attacks on Pakistan, with the Taliban India does not have those luxuries anymore. As far as the Iranians are concerned I'm hoping they don't try anything in Afghanistan the Afghans deserve to live in peace for once after decades of war and despair, and so do their neighbors (Practically Pakistan).

Did not read the rest of post. Taliban will rule and I know you as Iran-loyalist are rooting against that. You don't speak for Pakistani's if your loyalty is not even to your own country. Interesting. Iran hosted Taliban factions within its borders for years and was a key regional power that pushed the US out of Afghanistan. Perhaps they want Shia representation in the government. Still, even China and Pakistan said they wanted an inclusive government without explaining what this means. Wonder what Russia thinks.

Plus, time is of the essence. China and Pakistan will recognize the government as soon as possible.

Iran had no role in pushing US out of Afghanistan. It actually supported pro-US alliances in Afghanistan against the Taliban which led to tensions between Iran and Taliban:

Taliban is preparing for inter-Afghan dialogue for formation of government which no doubt would be inclusive. However, Iran is no position to talk about inclusive government. It supports minority Alawite rule in Syria against Sunni majority and supports militias in Iraq against government for the fact that the Iraqi gov't has inclusive nature and threatens Iranian interests in Iraq. This talk of inclusive government is signaling by Iran that it refuses to recognize Taliban rule and will leave door open to interfere in Afghanistan's affairs in future.

Shia's in Afghanistan face same situation everyone else faces. All people of Afghanistan are subjected to occasional terrorist attacks. Taliban is providing extra protection, security and attention to minorities, their own countrymen. Iran on other hand just wants to recruit Hazara Shia to fight in Syria to die for their interests. How does that show they care about them or seek their security? It's propaganda by Iran.

Correction: Iran did not push NATO out from Afghanistan, and neither it was in the position to. Pakistan was the key stakeholder and brought both Afghan Taliban and USA to the negotiation table to help settle this conflict.

As for the topic; The FM's customery Anti-USA statement notwithstanding (which is funny by the way because Iran had no issue with US-backed Afghan government, Northern Alliance, and India in Afghanistan), his statement is much the same like that of Troika Plus stakeholders. Just going with the flow.

Iran did cozy up to Afghan Taliban over the years. They are patient as well.

This is lies and slander against Taliban. Taliban never targeted Shias. Taliban are Muslim Sunni. They clashed with Hazaras militias whom fought with them in the past.

Iran does not arm nor train the Taliban. That is misinformation.
