India isn't under sanctions, Iran is. few years back, we were dependent on Russians to provide warships building steel before SAIL developed those inhouse.

Maybe Iran is making everyone else stupid by not declassifying the information on most of its indigenous ships except for a few that too are declassified after a small number of years, remember limited classified information Intl leakage the better.

Pakistan in 60's and 70's was making ships even Bangladesh is making ships it does not matter if these are civilian but the technology was available, It is 2011 Iran has huge Cash it is tough but not impossible to design and develop a small tonnage AC how ever many of the internal components engine and stuff will have to be imported I believe China can provide them (under civilian ship cooperation).

that thing is only 11,486 tons @ full load
we've already made three 10K ton ships and we prolly have the capability to make much bigger ones as well. A 20k ton+ AC should be no problem for Iran in the next decade.

Guys, I'm sure most of you are not aware that Iran is actually capable of producing ocean liners. In the past 4 years, 3 new ocean liners have been built by Iranian ship yards. They all weight around 10, 000 tons
Iran-Arak
185 meters long, 30 meters wide, and has the capacity to carry up to 30,000 tons of cargo (2,200 containers).

Iran-Kashan
P105 is 187 meters long and 30 meters wide. It has a height of 16.5 meters and weighs 9,502 tons. The ocean-going vessel has the capacity to carry some 2,200 containers at a speed of 21 knots.

Our economy is expected to pass 1 trillion by 2020 (we had a 100 bil GDP in 2000 and now we're 416 billion) so we also have the money. Who knows, maybe by 2025 we will have a carrier.

If Iran able to build the carrier then the real question would come what they are going to fly from it ? it have to start R@D for a super hornet type fighter to work as a carrier born fighter . is it easy to develop such fighter ? Iran commitment is appreciable but also it seems little over ambitious for Iran . I think Iran should concentrate moor on building modern warship like Chinese type 54 or Indian shivalik class and type 22 FAC of china to enhance its posture in this region after success in this venture only then you can go for air craft carrier .. what will you do with this carrier if you can not protect it from attack you need a battle group comprise of attack sub destroyer frigate support ship etc and most importantly a carrier Fighter .

Nicely said, i think before iran gets this carries they will get have destroyers and new fighter jets.
