Iran helped Taliban take Taywara district: Afghan Official
July 24, 2017
Iran has helped Taliban capture Taywara district in central-western province of Afghanistan, an Afghan official claimed.
Fazlulhaq Ihsan, the chief of provincial council, was involved in the recent insurgency to destroy Salma Dam in the neighbouring province of Herat, stopping a dam project in Ghor and countering Islamic State group.
“Iran’s intelligence has equipped the Taliban. It has provided cash to militants,” Ihsan said.
The fall of Taywarah district to militants happened on Sunday.
Experts also have said that the insurgents are seeking to reach Salma Dam by overrunning the district.
Iran, which has already expressed concerns regarding dam construction in Afghanistan, however, denies the recent claims.
In the assault on the district, Taliban militants also shot patients and doctors before torching the hospital.
Local civil society representatives criticized the central government for ‘negligence’ in preventing collapse of the district.
Wazir Noorani, an activist, said that more districts in Ghor will fall if the government doesn’t take necessary measures.
Afghan government has said that reinforcement forces have been deployed to reclaim Taywara district.
According to sources, five Afghan forces have been killed while 20 more have went missing in operation to retake the district.
Sixty Taliban fighters have also been killed in the district.
