One of the cultural heritages of Iran will be prescribed to another state again if Iran doesn’t undertake steps,” Hojatollah Dehkhodan secretary of IRI Polo Federation has told to Iranian IRNA news agency.

Recently the Hamzeh Ilhani Zadeh, the chairman of IRI polo federation had reported that after the attempt of appropriating the name of Iranian poet Nizami Gyanjavi the Azerbaijani try to do the same with the ancient Iranian game polo and for this reason have already applied officially to UNESCO.

Thus the secretary of IRI Polo Federation expresses his concerns about the fact that Azerbaijan may soon ascribe also the ancient Iranian game polo.

“If Iran doesn’t undertake steps to present Polo as Iranian national sport-game then Azerbaijan will ascribe it to itself soon. Two months later UNESCO conference will be held in Baku and once again we will see how one of the Iranian cultural heritages is being ascribed to another state.”

There are many disagreements between the Iranian and Azerbaijani relations recently. According to Iranian side, Azerbaijan presents not only the poet Nizami Gyanjavi as an Azerbaijani but also the musical instruments as well as polo sport game. All these cause dissatisfaction among the Iranian authorities and artists.

I thought UNESCO had professionals to go through sources before they prescribe things to various countries... seems like it is all about lobbying and $$$

You're quire right about that ! Even the National Poet of Pakistan wrote some of his best poetry in the Persian Language & even our National Anthem is composed in heavily Persianized Urdu !

Difference is that Ganja had a mostly Persian population. He was no Azerbaijani, didn't even know how to speak Azeri, let alone being part of that ethnicity. He is part of the Persian people and Persian literature. Besides geography, he has nothing to do with your country or people.

He was born of an urban background in Ganja (Great Seljuq empire now present-day Azerbaijan) and is believed to have spent his whole life in South Caucasus. According to De Blois, Ganja was a city which at that time had predominantly an Iranian population. The Armenian historian Kirakos Gandzaketsi (Ca. 1200–1271) mentions that: "This city was densely populated with Iranians and a small number of Christians"

Nezami couldn't speak Turkic and his mother tongue was PERSIAN that make him a persian and an IRANIAN.

Persian was not the language he only used for his poets, unlike Ottoman and Mughal poets, but also outside his poets. He could not speak Azeri, and certainly wasn't part of your artificial-created people. He was Persian, spoke Persian from his birth and lived in a region where Persians were the majority.

Azeri means Azerbaijani, which itself is a Persian word. Your country has been part of our history for more than 3000 years.

Its in Persianized Urdu - a language that already borrows heavily from the Persian Language !
