LONDON: Iran has released a string of top al Qaeda militants from detention so they can rebuild the extremist organisation on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, The Times reported Friday.

Citing Pakistani and Middle Eastern officials speaking anonymously, the Times said Iranian authorities were giving covert support to the Islamist militants as they fight against Nato troops.

“In many cases they are being facilitated by Iranian Revolutionary Guards,” The Times quoted a senior Pakistani intelligence official as saying.

The Times said those released include Saif al-Adel, a high-ranking Egyptian al Qaeda member on the FBI’s most wanted list for alleged involvement in the deadly 1998 bombings of US embassies in East Africa.

They also include Suleiman Abu Ghaith, a Kuwaiti accused of being Al-Qaeda’s official spokesman at the time of the September 11, 2001 attacks, and Abu Khayr al-Masri, a key aide to al Qaeda deputy leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri.

Three members of the family of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden were also among those freed, the officials were quoted by the Times as saying.

Several top al Qaeda leaders fled to Iran when the US invaded Afghanistan after 9/11 and Iran is suspected of keeping them under house arrest as a strategic asset against the United States.

Al Qaeda’s top leadership including Bin Laden and Zawahiri are believed to be in Pakistan’s tribal areas bordering Afghanistan, but a blitz of CIA drone strikes has taken a major toll on the group.

The Times quoted Pakistani officials as saying that Al-Adel had been named al Qaeda’s chief of operations for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

In July, Bin Laden’s son Omar said that 20 members of the al Qaeda chief’s family were stranded in Iran as Tehran was refusing to discuss their fate with Saudi Arabia.

However a Kuwaiti newspaper reported in November that a number of leading al Qaeda members, including Abu Ghaith, had moved from Iran to Yemen. – AFP

. . . . . .
this is not a new news,,,, Rumors are spreading very fast that This Saif Ul Adl will command Talban in North Waziristan if Army starts it's operation there i will post a Urdu article, which gives a clear picture of what is going on behind the scenes

.
Why would Iran do that??? Al Quaida / TTP is overtly anti-Iran. Some people dont consider hard fact when spreading propaganda. Further after their detention in Iran they will only use the opportunity to target more Shias. Though it is knows that Iran cannot digest "sunni" government Pakistan and Afghanistan at time when whole world is closing onto it but still freeing up AQ men is still far fetched.

.
Iran Helping a known anti-Shia organisation?
lol looks like Ahmedin Najad wants to get rid of his in-Laws finally

just like Sadam ws blamed for WMDs it was also blamed for supporting Al qaeda.

in fact the next proposed targets of American war start getting blamed hence Iran, Syria and Pakistan ar all blamed for playing double games, harbouring terrorists and proliferation or making of WMDs

although old but still check this link out

As recently as last February, Bush administration officials were preparing to accuse Tehran publicly of cooperating with and harbouring al Qaeda suspects as part of the administration's strategy for pushing for stronger U.N. sanctions against Iran. The strategy of portraying Iran as having links with al Qaeda was being pushed by an unidentified Bush adviser who had been "instrumental in coming up with a more confrontational U.S. approach to Iran," according a report by the Washington Post's Dafna Linzer on Feb. 10.

As Linzer revealed, the neoconservative faction in the administration was still pushing to link Iran with al Qaeda despite the fact that a CIA report in early February had reported the arrest by Iranian authorities of two more al Qaeda operatives trying to make their way through Iran from Pakistan to Iraq.

The danger of an al Qaeda effort to disguise an attack on the U.S. as coming from Iran was raised in an article in Foreign Affairs published in late April by former NSC adviser and counterterrorism expert Bruce Reidel.

In the article, Reidel wrote that Osama bin Laden may have plans for "triggering an all-out war between the United States and Iran," referring to evidence that al Qaeda in Iraq now considers Iranian influence in Iraq "an even greater problem than the U.S. occupation".

"The biggest danger," Reidel wrote, "is that al Qaeda will deliberately provoke a war with a 'false-flag' operation, say, a terrorist attack carried out in a way that would make it appear as though it were Iran's doing."

In a briefing for reporters about the article, Reidel said al Qaeda officals have "openly talked about the advisability of getting their two great enemies to go to war with each other", hoping that they would "take each other out".

yet another intersting read of what Al Qaeda was planning in Iraq.. where it wanted a war between shias and US leading to an all out war between Iran and US

7. A war between the Americans and Iran. We have noticed that the best of these wars to be ignited is the one between the Americans and Iran, because it will have many benefits in favor of the Sunni and the resistance, such as:

yet another link (old) showing the Hatred of Al Qaeda for Iran,

Al Qaeda #2: We’ll Attack Iran

Recently, Senator John McCain has repeatedly indicated that Iran and al-Qaeda are in cahoots. The terror group’s number two, Ayman al-Zawahiri, would beg to differ. In a long-promised online Q&A session, Zawahiri says it would be "in the interest" of Al-Qaeda to see Iran "sap[ped]" by a fight with the United States. Moreover, he seems to promise that the extremist collective will "battle" whoever wins that U.S.-Iran struggle.

seems like time is running out now. just like the WMDs, Americans will be looking for Bin Laden's calling card and family photo in Ahmedin Nijad's possessions.

Nicely done:cheers:

All of which does not mean the Iranian are not up to mischief - trust me they have penetrated Afghanistan rather throughly -- by the way, have you ever been inclined to search lists of officers attending military academy in India? It's really interesting, purely academic stuff of course.

lol

Iranian support of Nothern Aliiance is known. as we supported Taliban who are bitterley anti-Shia but our support of Taliban was not on secterian bases but their usefulness at that time.
now they are a common threat to us as they are to their own country and its neighbours.

that all aside. Pakistan should promptly cancel all military ties with Iran. I am aware their officers take part in our command and staff college course in Quetta. and then there are their cadets that come in EME college and PAF college too

remember their cadets were killed by Sipah sahabah few years back?
this is a disappointng development because Iran has been Pakistan's supporter in Indo-Pak wars and Kashmir issue.

not sure what Iran expects to gain when India is going under the American banner now. and how will America see all this remains to be seen.

but first thing first.. an assessment should be made about Iranian and Indian "alledged" military ties and training" and then decesion taken about the present military ties with Iran

one point to note is that China has also under gone few military exercises with India as well. now does it mean China is abandoning Pakistan? or China and India getting together? while America is investing so heavily politically, ecnomically, intellectually and all that to groom India to keep a check on China?

Again coming back to the topic, Al Qaeda and Iran dont mix together, they are miles appart in Ideology.. Al Qaeda might want America to believe that thus encouraging it to attack Iran and thus fullfill its stated goal of a devestating impact on a shia country

.
I don't know but i have the feeling that iran is embarking upon cold start.
ideology must have come from Indians.
Those ruling Iran does not have brains to think deeply.
They are just religious freaks or some thing else in the cover of religious freaks.

I know, till late 80's many Iranians were studying in Lahore medical and engineering colleges that includes girls and boys both.

.
Last time I checked being related to someone does not make you guilty of their crimes. But I doubt an Al-Qaeda personnel were released as Al-Qaeda and Jundullah have openly declared war against Iran. They would be freeing people that would just come back and hit them again. Iran has no operations abroad so I'm guessing whoever these people are were found at Iranian borders or inside them. WOuld someone please expose the names of people that were released.
