TEHRAN: The head of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guards on Thursday made a pointed visit to three islands in the Gulf whose ownership is fiercely disputed by Tehran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Guards Commander Mohammad Ali Jafari, accompanied by his naval commander, Ali Fadavi, went to the islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb to deliver a speech stressing they were Iran's "strategic and sensitive territory," the Guards' official news website said.

Jafari expressed satisfaction with the condition of Iranian combat units stationed on Abu Musa, it said. He also offered a message of "friendship" to neighbouring Arab countries on the Gulf.

The visit was likely to be viewed as incendiary by the UAE, which claims the islands under the terms of a 1971 agreement signed when Britain ended its colonial-era reign over that part of the Gulf.

But Iran rejects any UAE claim to the islands, saying they have always been part of its territory and that it never renounced its ownership.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad triggered the fury of the UAE and its allied Arab monarchies when he visited the islands in April to reinforce Tehran's position.

The six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council called Ahmadinejad's trip "a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the United Arab Emirates over its three islands."

Iran's military has vowed to defend the islands. It maintains a permanent military base and airfield on Abu Musa, the biggest of the three and the only one to be inhabited.

The islands are at a strategic location in the oil-rich Gulf, permitting control over access to the waterway.

The UAE has won support from the United States in the dispute, with Washington urging Iran to agree to the UAE's demand that the issue be resolved through direct negotiations.

The United States this month sent an unspecified number of its highly sophisticated F-22 Raptor fighter jets to the UAE, though it presented the deployment as "routine".
Last December, the United States announced a $3.48 billion arms deal with the UAE that the Pentagon said included two sophisticated missile defence batteries, 96 missiles, two radars, spare parts and training.

my oh my!

Not this again!

Only some braindead khalijee can claim another country's island when in fact the island was part of Iran since unification in 600 BC! The island was lost in early 20th century to the Brits and was later given back to Iran. In the mean time, the UAE arabs were allowed to roam around on the islands and have admin positions by the brits. But merely a few decades later the Brits and Iranian officials settled the score and the islands were given back to iran. Now the khalijees are claiming the islands!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF?!

for ****'s sake, the UAE wasn't even a country till a few decades ago! The islands were taken over by the Brits after 2500 yeas of Iranian rule and then given back a few decades after. Where does UAE come into the picture?!

. .
Iranian officials are visiting Iranian islands.

they think the islands belong to them. The reason you ask? There aint no reason, they just want them. They think because of the political situation, they can take advantage. They don't understand that things change and moves like this will bite them in the ***. There was once a time when China was sanctioned and cornered. Now China is second to only the US and stands tall in her region.

Iran, a nation of 80 million with vast natural resources and a great history is already the 17th largest economy by PPP. However, the political situation and the sanctions have got the country cornered. But just like China, the status quo will change and all the people who did harm to the nation will have to answer a rising regional and global power.

That's what I thought as well. During a time when Iran is being unfairly persecuted by the USA+Israel, these other guys come along like opportunists to take a bite. Or maybe they are under orders from the USA to increase pressure on Iran from another direction.

100% agreed.

The mistake of the USA and their allies, is that they do not think long-term. Civilizations like Persia and China rise and fall over thousands of years, these "new" nations (like the USA) do not understand it.

.
Iran is acting like a cornered cat, she realizes that she is about to get torn apart so she is acting out in a reckless manner.
Even if Iran considered the island as part of its own territory, since their is no agreement on the matter, it is considered a provocation for a military official to visit it. Next time Iranians should't open threads crying that we are lowering oil prices and asking where is the love?!
Anyway, Iran as well as GCC knows that as soon Iranian facilities get attacked, the first thing Iran will lose is the island, next Ahwaz, South Azerbaijan after that.

Exactly correct ! Iran is using the 'NORTH KOREAN PLAYBOOK'.:bunny:

Just like Iran, China is poorly patched up collection of countries.
China: Tibet, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Yi people, Manchu people.(As soon as economy stops growing, these people will get independence)
Iran: Ahwaz, Kurdistan, Baluchistan, South Azerbaijan.(Any war with the US, these people will get independence)

No, the North Korean playbook is to lethally bombard South Korean islands with artillery shells, and sink the Cheonan with 104 millitary personnel on board.

Iran is a thousand times more civilized than North Korea. And unlike North Korea, the Iranian civilization has a great and proud history.

All the Uyghurs and Tibetans combined, make up less than 1% of China's population. And not one country in the entire world recognizes any soveriegn state based on these ethnicities, certainly not yours.

And arabestan is a big asss desert with nothing but sand, camels and lizards! Real countries, countries like Iran and China, are made up of nations with thousands of years of history. Iranian turks, Iranian kurds and Iranian Persians have all had their say in history and they have all had commanding positions in the nation that is Iran. Any internal conflict is always about the role of these nations in the 2500 year old society that is Iran.

Honestly, you saudis are jelous of everything and everyone. You're jelous because your country is 99 percent sand, you're jelous of other people's history and diversity, you're jelous of other people's cultures...

Get a grip of yourself.

A great and proud history of defeat and enslavement. Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Mongols, Turks, Russian, English and Arab 2.0(soon:D).

And then you guys wonder why we don't like Persians.

There is nothing wrong being being defeated at some points.

History goes in cycles. Great civilizations rise and fall.

The USA was created barely 200 years ago, they have no idea what it means to last and persevere through history. They have never even been invaded on their own soil, due to their geographic isolation from the rest of the world.

And now the USA along with Israel, they want to persecute other countries in the name of their "superior" American culture that has not lasted even a few hundred years.

Mosa, if there's one wahabi here that can be logical it's you. You're becoming a troll like the rest of your lot.

I couldn't care less what you think of "persians." Tell me why you think these islands belong to the emaratis and use factual and logical statements, not something sheikh abdulwahab the suicide bomber told you in your local mosque.

The irony is that every single one of those countries that you mentioned has been defeated by the very same countries in the list!!! God you're an Einstein lol.

And as I said before, in the past 32 years, countless arabs have "bombed the **** out" while Iran has done whatever the hell it wanted. The chances of another arab country getting "bombed the **** out" is much higher. You can bet on it.
