Iran confirmed Sunday that it has, as previously speculated, sent troops to aid President Bashar Assad's crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in his country.

The United Nations and human rights groups estimate that over 13,000 people have been killed in Syria since the uprising began in March 2011 – 9,200 of them civilians.

"If the Islamic Republic was not present in Syria, the massacre of civilians would have been twice as bad," General Ismail Kuoni, deputy-commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' Qods Force, told Tehran's ISNA news agency.

Iran, he added, "Had physically and non-physically stopped the rebels from killing many more among the Syrian people."

This was a rare admission by an Iranian official that Tehran was truly aiding the Damascus regime.

The quote was later removed from ISNA's website.

Sunday's statement was particularly strident, as it followed the brutal killing of 92 people, including 32 children, in Houla, in the embattled province of Homs, by Damascus' forces.

The carnage was strongly condemned by the United Nations, the United States, Britain, Germany and France; and the Arab League called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council.

Earlier Sunday, Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said "armed groups" carried out the attack in Houla.

"No Syrian artillery or heavy weapons were used in the area of Houla," he told reporters.

Meanwhile, a senior Arab League official said that Syria has denied permission for a deputy of UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan to travel to Damascus.

The official said that Syria "made clear" that the decision against former Palestinian foreign minister Nasser al-Kidwa "was not personal, but rather because it did not want to deal with the Arab League."

Annan is due in Damascus on Monday. The Arab League named Al-Kidwa as his deputy in March.

What's the big deal Saudis have sent troops to Bahrain. No one makes a big deal about it. In any event I am sure west and sauds have sent people in Syria under cover to cause unrest in Syria

Bahrian was GCC and neighbor to Saudi and also the launch platform to disturb border areas in Saudi control.

Saudi Arabia sent army openly with all justification, and did nothing of sort what Bashar Assad is doing in Syria and Turkey!

You can't draw parallel.

yea yea. I simply call it double standards. My own preference is that no outrside person and or country should interfere in any country. But its a bit rich with all this western propaganda which tries to get us to accept double standards

not only saudi arabia but the rest of the GCC countries sent troops to Bahrain to secure the government sectors not to crackdown the demonstrations and kill the people as that pice of sH!t called Assad النعجه is doing there to the innocent people. I challenge you and so everybody els to bring any proof that the GCC forces cracked down the protest in Bahrain. on the other hand I can bring u many proofs for what the Iranian agents did in bahrain or what they're doing in Syria these days.

Both the Saudis and Iranians are involved in a massacre.

Ahamadinejad was someone who I thought had some positive leverage, but he turned out to be as bad as many of the other politicians around the word.

Nothing new, we already know. Those are being taken care of by FSA, and will be taken care of by OTHERS very soon.

Yes she was involved, because she refused to watch Syrians being killed, and supplied FSA and Syrian with arms to defend themselves.

Silence Zionist ally. You are acting to keep Arabs and Muslims under the American/Israeli boot. Why did you never assist Palestinians or do you only help Bahrain against unarmed civilians

Those who think Iran will get away with this are just fooling themselves. What a dear price Iran will pay?! first Syria, next IRAN.

We already know about Iranian involvement months ago, I have met personally many Syrians who witnessed Iranians fighting along Al-Assad gangs. So, we don't need Israeli NEWS to confirm or deny it.
