TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Vice-President and Head of Iran's Department of Environment Mohammad Javad Mohammadizadeh announced on Saturday that Iran has shattered the US monopoly over biodiesel technology and become the world's second country in the field.

Mohammadizadeh opened Iran's first biodiesel plant in the country's Central province of Isfahan on Thursday.

"By opening the first biodiesel production line in Iran, the US monopoly was broken and Iran became the world's second country with superior biodiesel technology," the Iranian vice-president said, addressing the 'First National Seminar of Sustainable Development and Green Fuel' in Tehran today.

He noted that utilizing biodiesel as an alternate and clean fuel can create suitable chemical compounds in the air, and added that biodiesel is a renewable and retrievable energy source.

Mohammadizadeh said that Biodiesel has no negative impact on sea animals, and meantime eliminates the accumulated smoke of diesel vehicles.

The biodiesel plant was inaugurated on Thursday in the town of Tiran and Kravan, located 45 kilometers West of the provincial capital city of Isfahan.

The construction of the plant is part of Iran's attempts to increase reliance on environment-friendly fuels.

The construction of Isfahan's biodiesel plant has cost more than $12mln.
In December, Head of Iran's Fuel Conservation Company (IFCO) Abbas Kazzemi announced that his company has set up a specialized workgroup in cooperation with Ministry of Agricultural Jihad to produce biodiesel.

"Upon the request of cabinet, a fuel basket was defined recently in which the share of fuel used by diesel cars rose by 17 percent hitting 24 percent," Kazzemi said.

"With regard to increasing the number of diesel vehicles in the country, widespread programs have been defined for meeting this kind of vehicles' fuel, including production of biodiesel from food processing factories' wastes," he added.

Kazzemi pointed to good quality of home-made biodiesel, and said, "Biodiesel applications are the same as petroleum-based diesel even though it has a privilege that does not pollute the air."

Production of bio ethanol is also under way to meet fuel needs of diesel vehicles, Kazzemi said, adding a number of researches have been carried out in a bid to produce this kind of fuel from seeds.

"It was expected Ministry of Agricultural Jihad to play the role of upstream sector in the issue because it owns the needed materials including land, water and seeds," he said.

"One of the best applications of biodiesel is blending it with gasoline and gasoil to raise octane rate in the products," Kazzemi noted.
