Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has reportedly said that early learning of the English language paves the way for the West's "cultural invasion" of Iran.

The head of the state-run High Education Council, Mehdi Navid-Adham, said to local TV on Sunday that English classes in primary schools are "against laws and regulations." He added that English was no longer part of the educational curriculum. High school students will keep learning English, the official added.

Accroding to Mehdi Navid-Adham, primary schools will now focus on the Farsi language and classes of Iranian culture.

The news comes after an announcement from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps regarding recent protests. The Revolutionary Guard declared that the demonstrations had been orchestrated with the help of external forces, including the United States and Britain, and had been successfully suppressed.

Earlier in January, Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations Gholam Ali Khoshroo said during an emergency UN Security Council meeting that Tehran had "hard evidence" proving protests were "directed from abroad." The meeting was called by the US, which has repeatedly accused Iranian authorities of cracking down on pro-democracy protesters.

A wave of protests has swept across the country in recent weeks, with thousands of people taking part in demonstrations. At least 21 people have been killed and over 400 hundred more arrested as a result of the unrest. However, most of those detained have been subsequently released, according to sources in police.

Reports of the ban have already aroused reaction on social networks.

If its true , wrong move
We should add more languages to the pool of choices so the students can choose their preference language like French , Spanish , Urdu and other languages then we can end Arabic and English dominance in schools .

. . . . .
According to Wiki typical 6th grade pupil spends 5 hours on Persian, 4 hours Science, 2 hours on Arabic, 2 hours on religious education and 1 hour on history a week. Is this true?

+In high school 3 years learning Arabic and English classes I think 2-3 hours a week for each one of them .
There is a Arabic class and there is a Quran class and there is a religious education so Arabic teachings have more time compare to Farsi or English :undecided: and here I am the one who cant even talk a little bit in Arabic with our Arab cousins :partay:

Khamenei is stupid.

English is everywhere. Even Chinese and Japanese are learning it for education.

For that twitter about Pakistan.

Pakistan never banned English. Pakistan just removed English as an official language.

.
Why learn Arabic? Aren't Farsi (for Local) and English (for International) be enough?

They say is bc its language of Quran and we have alot of muslims in our country so everyone should learn Arabic :undecided:
I think it should be student who pick what he/she like to learn .

Isn't Quran translated into Farsi?

In India it has been translated into many local languages.

Hey, do you want me to say that your fathers and forefathers were all stupid and morons? If not, don't say that again, specially not under the topics related to Iran.

True, yet it can be almost impossible to find someone who speaks English in either China or Japan. So the quality of English teaching is questionable.

I went on a vacation to Japan a while back, I was in a theme park and I couldn't find a single person who spoke English. I had to resort to writing down Chinese characters on a piece of paper so they could understand what I was saying (Japanese write using Chinese characters). :P

I think Persian and Arabic also share a similar writing system, the alphabet for example.

What is the official language of Pakistan? I heard they were changing it to Urdu, then it went back to English?
