Iran has signed a deal with China to purchase 24 J-10 fighter jets between 2008 and 2010, Russian news agency Novosti reported. The jets were developed based on the technology of Israel's Lavi fighter jet, whose technology was sold to China against the wishes of the US.

Novosti stated that the J-10 has a range of 2,940 kilometers, bringing it within range of Israel. Iran's current MiG-29 jets have a range of 2,100 kilometers.
A Russian military expert, quoted by the agency, said that Iran plans to use the new aircraft as part of its defense of the Bushehr nuclear facility in the face of a possible attack.
The Israeli Lavi fighter jet was developed in the 1980s but the project was canceled following pressure from America, which feared that the new jet would compete with its F-16 in international markets. The US subsequently sold F-16s to Israel at reduced costs.
China began developing the J-10 in 2004 and currently has 89 aircraft in active service.
Novosti added that no response was given by the Prime Minister's office.

This is for the sake of propaganda. Its either Russians jealous that Iran is buying from China and not Russia or Israel not wanting Iran to buy this aircraft because:pakistan: slight modifications would make it better than Lavi.

I think if it is true, it is good news for Iran.

Iran should purchase any military hardware to enhance their defence capabilities especially facing the threat from the US.

But I think the delivery would be delayed since Pakistan would be the first export market for the J-10.

Iran would probably get their J-10's after Pakistan.

I think china is for now in no position to deliever orders since its currently fullfilling her own needs of the armed forces. Pakistan isnt interested in this version of the J-10. So if iran is interested it might get it first after china fullfills her own needs.

I know of only 2 the J-10A and the J-10S (twin seater)

Which other kind of J-10 is there.

The J-10 being better than Lavi wont concern israel much. Israel now has f-15I and F-16I, which are the best variants of the F-15 and F-16 respectively. And if the Elat 2052 is mounted on them, then iranians would do good not to waste money on those J-10s at all.

Yes. Why would China jeopardize its $billion WalMart business for few cents from Iran?

I think that is not the main point.

The fact is Iran never approached China for the J-10s, therefore, the affect of WalMart business is hypothetical.

But I understand your sentiment, this would really annoy the US.
