Services of ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit hired for IPL matches

Date: 19 March, 2010(Friday)
Bipin Dani, in Mumbai

It has learnt that more than three officials of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) are keeping watch on players' performance in the on-going third edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in India.

The world's richest governing body-Indian cricket board 'could not afford' to hire their services last year, when the second edition of the IPL was held in South Africa. "Yes, as reported in media outlets last year, the ICC’s ACSU has been contracted by the IPL for this year’s event", confirmed ICC spokesman James Fitzgerald.

According to the sources close to the IPL, Arrie De Beer, the Regional Security Manager (RSM) for South Africa and Zimbabwe, Ronald Hope, the RSM for England and West Indies and Mr. Martin from Dubai are in India overseeing the players' movements. Niranjan Virk, who promoted as a chief investigator, is likely to be the co-ordinator.

Dharam Veer Singh Yadav, the last recruited RSM for India and Sri Lanka, is now overseeing the matches in Bangladesh against England, will also join the squad for the remainder of the IPL matches, it has also learnt.

"The players' ICC rankings are not affected even when they can't perform well in the domestic (IPL) matches and owing to this reason, the Anti-Corruption people can't take chances with betting and match-fixing", a source said, reminding about the possible involvement of players in the ICL (Indian Cricket League) matches.

Please stop looking through that lense.

This is not about Pakistan not playing IPL. Most of the Pakistani fans were hapy because Pakistan not playing IPL mean our players are not expose to the corruption in IPL.

Why do you think IPL is not accepting ICC inspectors and rules of the anti corruption body?

Because the BCCI runs cricket now, stop crying and move on.

Nothing wrong with it as long as it is clean but you know that underworld is funneling black money through Bollywood celebarities into the IPL.

They also earn far more through match fixing.

and how do u know that the underworld is financing the IPL ????? lol what a joke, something is burning for sure.

IPL is a support organ for circulating illegal money in India. I don't know why India blames Pakistan when problem is home grown with this kind of financial support.

Indian Punters League cashes in on IPL-3

Sanjay Jog / Mumbai March 20, 2010, 0:21 IST

When action off the field surpasses the action on field, innovation is what is expected.

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) frenzy catches up with cricket fanatics, action elsewhere (behind closed doors) is churning out big money as well — with some estimates pegging the amount at around Rs 5,000 crore per match.

According to sources, the bookies have changed the way they operate. Given the large number of games being played, the operators are opting for weekly settlement with punters, instead of the daily system preferred earlier.

The settlement cycle also depends on a punter’s credit worthiness. But bookies say that on days when two games are being played it becomes very difficult to find time. So, they opted for a longer settlement cycle.

Betting being illegal in India, most of the bookies are using the confines of their cars, instead of operating from hideouts in buildings, as they are mobile and can evade the police easily. Giving them company are mobile phones, with some meant for outgoing calls only, and laptops to keep track of scores and other developments on the field.

There is more to it. Traditionally, punters used to organise bets on who would win. Now, there are several options: If you go for a ‘session’, you have to put your money on number of runs scored in a session (innings). For example, if a team scores between, say, 150 and 180 runs, the punter will make money. If a team falls short of the 150-run mark, or manages to go past 180, the bookie takes the cash.

The other option is ‘gala’ in bookie-speak. This form of betting typically starts from the 12th over and requires people to predict how many runs would be scored over the next few overs. If, say, someone bets on a team scoring 19 runs in three overs and the batting team manages to score up to 19 runs, the punter makes the money. In case the team scores 20 or more runs, the bookie walks away with the cash.

There is a third variation — ‘khadda’ — where no one is willing to take a bet since the outcome is hard to predict. Here, it is the bookies who are involved and it’s the “insiders” who decide. “This is more of an exception and not the rule as no one wants to lose money,” said a bookie.

The betting odds are decided by a ring of leading bookies who decide the rates, which is then communicated to the others over the phone.

For those looking to play straight, there is the traditional form of betting as well. Bookies said Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders are seen as the hot favourites in IPL-3. As a result, someone betting one rupee on these four teams will get less in return. In contrast, the odds on a Rajasthan Royals win are 1:2.

Similarly, betting on Sachin Tendulkar, Virendra Sehwag and Adam Gilchrist is considered to be less rewarding as these players are seen to be match winners.

The IPL is an Indian league and is controlled and managed by the BCCI. No one can have any objections to it of any sort. International players are not forced to play, they opt to themselves. The IPL is a monster in cricket now and it will only get bigger. The ICC cannot and will not do anything to stop the IPL. All such baseless allegations will not have any effect on the IPL.

and how do u know that the underworld is financing the IPL ????? lol what a joke, something is burning for sure.

In past, entire Bollywood was financed by people like Dawood Ibrahim and now the same lot is supporting IPL. You can cry and yap as much as you like but the fact remians that even today Bolllywood is financed by the underworld and now Bollywood is involved in the IPL to circulate the money from underworld.

Do you have any idea the amount of money that is bet on every India vs Pakistan game. Betting is a part if every game in the world and is nothing new and nothing to get so excited about.

@desiman this is absolutely wrong attitude and I consider not good, if you are big that does not mean you should not follow the rules. I do not appreciate BCCI bulling ICC, they should follow the rules.

All the given ICC rules are being followed. As per ICC regulations itself domestic leagues do not have to follow ICC norms the way international are supposed to. Such propaganda is spread by people who cannot tolerate the IPL's immense growth. In terms of bullying the ICC, either BCCI does it or the Australian or English boards do it. For too long Australia and England have controlled world cricket and its only fair that now the BCCI is in the lead. This is not a comment about anyone being “Bigger” or anything. 60% of the revenue of the ICC comes from the BCCI and events in India and I see no wrong in BCCI have more say in things. Even with that all rules are being followed and all such allegations are just results of jealousy and nothing else.
