Jayalalithaa says no to IPL matches in Chennai involving Sri Lankan players

CHENNAI: With anti-Sri Lankan sentiments being whipped up in Tamil Nadu, chief minister J Jayalalithaa said on Tuesday that her government will not permit IPL matches in Chennai that involve Sri Lankan players, umpires and even support staff for the event.

"In view of the popular antipathy and anger in Tamil Nadu against the actions of the government of Sri Lanka, the state government is of the view that IPL matches involving Sri Lankan players, umpires and other officials should not be played in Tamil Nadu," she said in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The chief minister said the BCCI may be advised by the Centre to prevail upon the IPL organizers not to allow Sri Lankan players, officials, umpires and support staff to take part in the tournament in Tamil Nadu.

"We will permit IPL matches to be held in Tamil Nadu, only if organizers provide an undertaking that no Sri Lankan players, umpires, officials or support staff participate in these matches," she said.

Justifying her stand, Jayalalithaa said, "In such a hostile and tense environment, we apprehend that the participation of Sri Lankan players in the IPL tournament, with many games to be played in Chennai, will aggravate an already surcharged atmosphere and further offend the sentiments of the people."

Pointing out that all political parties in Tamil Nadu have repeatedly voiced their grave concern regarding these issues, she said, "The atmosphere is, therefore, already surcharged with a groundswell of popular opinion against the Sri Lankan government."

WELLINGTON - Recovering rapidly from an assault that left him with life-threatening injuries, New Zealand cricketer Jesse Ryder is now "back on his feet" but is disappointed to miss out on his IPL stint this year.

The 28-year-old, who had a fractured skull and a punctured lung after being brutally beaten outside a Christchurch bar here on Thursday last week, was brought out of induced coma on Saturday and shifted out of the ICU yesterday.

The temperamental cricketer is now able to move a little inside his hospital room, according to his manager Aaron Klee.

"Nothing's changed medically in terms of official updates, but he's just steadily improving and building up his strength. So it's just resting time from here on in, but you know, it's quite a remarkable improvement from 48 hours ago," he told reporters at WellingtonAirport today.

"He's absolutely talking, sitting there having conversations and he's up on his feet, it's nice to see the big guy back on his feet again."

The hard-hitting batsman was to leave for the IPL on Friday last week to play for the Delhi Daredevils.

Klee said Ryder "was very excited about the IPL. He saw it as a great opportunity to get back on the world stage and do what he does best."

In March last year, Ryder had taken a break from international cricket due to his drinking problem which had landed him in trouble on previously as well.

Any one watched Gayle bat today ??

"What a scintillating knock it has been from the big Jamaican, probably one of the best T20 knocks one would ever see. The ball kept disappearing at a frequency that must have tired eyes, minds, heads and hands as the ball kept going high in the air and clearing the fence with utmost ease. Brendon McCullum's knock of 158* might have to bow down in front of this 175* by Gayle off just 66 balls"
