92 percent of iPhone owners that are "somewhat likely" or "extremely likely" to upgrade their smartphone in the next 12 months plan to purchase another iPhone, according to investment banking firm Morgan Stanley.

Apple's loyalty rate, up from 86 percent a year ago, is based on an April 2017 survey of 1,000 smartphone owners aged 18 and above in the United States. It's the highest iPhone retention rate recorded by Morgan Stanley since an all-time high of 93 percent set in September 2015, when the iPhone 6s launched.

An excerpt from Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty's research note distributed today:It's our belief that a maturing installed base that is accustomed to iOS and increased press around potential new technologies in the upcoming iPhone drove the strong year-over-year increase. Importantly, the rise in Apple's loyalty rates comes after Samsung, Apple's biggest competitor in the United States, introduced the Galaxy S8, which was available for pre-order starting March 30th. Apple's loyalty rate of 92% dwarfs that of all other vendors, with Samsung garnering a 77% retention rate, followed by LG (59%), Motorola (56%), and Nokia (42%).Despite reports suggesting "iPhone 8" mass production could be delayed by months, Huberty said Morgan Stanley's Greater China Technology Research colleagues have "not yet seen delays in the supply chain" and still expect new iPhone production to start on time for most components, including the OLED display.

"Nevertheless, we remain conservative in our initial expectations for iPhone supply," the research note cautioned.

Morgan Stanley raised its price target for Apple's stock to $177 today, up from $161, given growing confidence in its 2018 fiscal year "supercycle" estimates, along with a greater mix of recurring, high-margin services revenue, and a larger cash balance with potential for repatriation in the United States.

The samsung s3 came out in 2012 not 2010.
And if you phones work fine then good for you !!! but almost every android user will tell you the phones slow down after a year and a half.

This is about as surprising as water being wet. The vast majority of iPhone customers are very loyal.

with some even approaching the level of a cultish mentality.

I have been an iPhone User since iPhone 3G but I did not buy iPhone 7 and won't be buying iPhone 8 either unless their are major changes. I would love to buy one of those good Chinese smartphones but I have never seen one in Canada.

I own not just almost all the iPhone models (except the new red ones and some plastic iPhone 5s) but most of the other Apple products like rMBP, iMac, Apple TV, iPad but...now I'm thinking perhaps iPhone 7 is going to be my last iPhone (my last personal phone while from company, of course, I will keep getting the new models of iPhones for app testing purposes) after testing Samsung Galaxy S8. That Phone is really beautiful and modern with curved glass that makes it truly bezel-less and the Quad HD display and color rendition of Super AMOLED screen is much better. The only reason behind my stay in Apple now has been the apps, I have purchased a lot of great apps. I don't like to fill my storage with cheap apps so I have always purchased the best apps or done in-app purchases, later on, to get rid of ads or unlock the full functionality. But recently, I have realized that now even Google store has an equally large number of great apps that match their iOS counterparts. I need to break this vicious cycle, though I always build a gaming PC, still, I like to use iMac and MacBook for most of the office work due to the sheer reason of my familiarity with Mac OS.

With Steve Jobs demise, the innovation also died at Apple. The current CEO, a loathsome money sucker, has no taste or penchant for the innovation, he is rather stifling it. Though Apple products were always considered more expensive than the competition, those were above the competition too for the most part but not anymore...my Mac Pro is an outdated piece of uber-expensive black trash can while so much has changed but I can't upgrade it without paying hefty amounts to Apple and even then the upgradeability and expansion are very limited. The only product has some advantage is my iMac with the 5k display as it beats the competition in terms of raw pixel real estate/price..it is really nice but still, it needs an upgrade.

Now all of the OEMs are offering full touch screens on their laptops, I'm stuck with the finicky touch bar which is very limited in functionality and a lot of apps still do not support it properly. Thus I had to go with Lenovo to complement or replace the MacBook and a custom build workstation to replace my Apple trash can.

I really hope that this CEO leaves Apple and some visionary takes over like Jonhy Ive may be, who loves nice product design. BTW 1000 is a very small sample size to arrive at some conclusion and we don't know about how homogeneous is the sample..

How about a Chinese smartphone? Any opinion on WannaCry type issues?

How about a Chinese smartphone? Any opinion on WannaCry type issues?

I have no idea but even iPhone is made in China...I think like 80% or more of the top smartphones are made in China. BTW, I'm not too much into the smartphones and know about every smartphone on the planet.

However, iPhones I have trusted till now and I think it is time move on since Apple isn't able to keep up the pace with the competition especially after the death of Steve. Once iPhone used to lead but now it lags behind almost all top brands, while most of the smartphones offer better displays at much higher resolutions, better cameras, better weather sealing, better expandability through expansion cards... so I really don't see how long can I linger on with my self-coerced loyalty. Now Android is getting refined. The only issues or concerns remaining are related to the security but I guess those have also been addressed. As long as, I'm using iPhone alone, it sounds okay but as soon as I compare it with any top brand, I feel the difference. But my iPhone will stay with me for quite some time. It is just I don't intend to buy a new one if it again turns out to be another incremental iteration. Why should I give my hard-earned money to this company while better options are available? and by the way, I don't get anything in return for the customer loyalty rather Apple tries to perpetuate its ecosystem on its customers so it becomes very very costly for them to leave. For example, I have been using Apple TV and updated to their latest 4th gen offering but still it did not provide me what I wanted to then my friend told me about nVidia Shield with Tegra X graphics and 4k support so I can watch a lot of 4k content on my 4K TV, in addition, Tegra X has sufficient horses to do some casual gaming. I have the 4k display, I have 4k content but the bottleneck was the Apple TV.

And it is not the first change, my first phone was made by Nokia, then i-mate and then Apple :)
