iPhone Loses Market Share Dominance in China, Report Says

Huawei is expected to beat out the iPhone in China next year with the Mate 60 Pro, featuring a Chinese processor.

Apple’s iPhone lost its top spot among Chinese smartphones, according to a Jefferies analyst note originally reported by CNBC. A lackluster release of the iPhone 15 allowed Huawei to replace the iPhone as the number one spot for market share.

Apple expected the most expensive iPhone 15 to be a top seller, however, Jefferies analysts see a double-digit decline in sales for the phone this year. Volume growth for the iPhone has been negative since the launch of the latest model. Initial reports previously showed that Apple cut production of the iPhone 15 by 8 million units leading up to its official announcement date.

Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Meanwhile, Huawei phone sales in China experienced high double-digit growth in 2023, outpacing Apple amidst a slowdown in smartphone sales for the region.

“The trend suggests iPhone would lose to Huawei in 2024,” wrote Jefferies analysts. “We believe weak demand in China would eventually lead to lower-than-expected global shipments of iPhone.”
Huawei launched the Mate 60 Pro, its latest high-end smartphone with a made-in-China processor. While the 7-nanometer processor is not as advanced as Apple’s 3-nanometer, Huawei’s technology development represents a significant advancement in the US-China chip war.

Counterpoint Research also saw a decline in sales for iPhones in China, blaming an economy struggling to rebound from a COVID slump. However, Counterpoint analysts say Huawei could sell 5 to 6 million units of the Mate 60 Pro alone this year, and that could rise above 10 million units in 2024.

US and China relations underwrite the smartphone war. Just last month, Chinese officials banned government employees from using iPhones at work, one week before Apple unveiled the iPhone 15. China has vowed to cut reliance on foreign technologies, and doing so could hurt Apple’s market capitalization in Asia. The ban on iPhones reflects similar United States policies, such as the Federal Communications Commission designating Huawei a national security risk.

huawei sales drop outside china markets is not because of technology but because of fear / ban.

China has to take step of bans on govt employees to use of iphone if it wants other companies to suffer

A big EU multinational company i work for recently banned use of chinese phone including xiaomi recently for all of its employees

Wait..what?...Apple was #1?..I thought it had fallen out of the top 5 in China.
Baby... You made the Beijing boy very embarrassed.😂😂😂

Baby. you know that both Apple and Tesla have Chinese technology.

I don't know why you have to talk about iPhone and Tesla when they have Chinese technology... Because the US cannot independently manufacture anything?

I don't know why you guys talk about anything either.
Your computers have US CPUs, your tallest skyscrapers that dominate your city skylines are designed by American architects and engineers, even your 3 Gorges dam has GE turbines.

Can you guys do anything by yourselves without Western know-how???

Because the US cannot independently manufacture anything?
It's all about who is willing to work the cheapest per hour and who is willing to accept the most pollution.

You want to say anything else constructive or continue trolling?

Simply because Tesla cars only has several models. BYD has many models.

China already has domestic CPU. The 3 Gorgees dam was built in 1990's. China doesn't need to import tubines from GE for new hydropower projects now.

iPhone sales in China shrink as US political tensions grow

By Samantha Murphy Kelly, CNN Business

Updated 5:04 PM EDT, Mon October 16, 2023

CNN —
Demand for Apple’s new iPhone 15 lineup is weaker in China than for last year’s models, according to analysts.

Sales for the iPhone 15 are down 4.5% in China compared to iPhone 14 sales in the first two weeks after its launch, according to Counterpoint Research. Separately, Bloomberg reported on Monday financial firm Jefferies said iPhone 15 sales dropped by a double-digit percentage following strong customer demand for Huawei’s new Mate 60 smartphone line.

Apple (AAPL) shares fell 0.08% following the reports.

The reports come amid a floundering Chinese economy, a struggling housing market, and more competition among higher-end vendors in China, particularly from Chinese device manufacturer Huawei.

“We’re seeing a lot of nationalism right now as Chinese consumers who think they’ve been wronged by the US government and sanctions are gravitating toward the Mate 60 and that is edging into Apple volumes,” Jeff Fieldhack, research director at Counterpoint, told CNN.

At the same time, China remains very important to Apple as it is the largest market behind the US. Fieldhack said he doesn’t believe Huawei will surpass Apple right now in terms of smartphone sales but expects continued interest in the Mate 60 will continue to “eek” into Apple’s numbers.

“Apple made a lot of gains during its launch period last year, where it became number one in China,” he said. “Things looked strong but now, with the political tension and competition, that is a reason for concern.”

However, the Phone 15 lineup is up about 10% year-over-year in the US, according to Counterpoint. That’s strong growth for Apple considering sales fell for the third consecutive quarter in August, ahead of the iPhone 15 launch.

The latest iPhone 15 devices come with a slimmer design, a more-advanced main camera system and a customizable Action button, which gives the silence button additional controls, from starting a voice memo to writing a note. Perhaps the biggest change coming to the models is that they will now use a USB-C charging cord, ending an 11-year run with Apple’s proprietary Lightning charging cable.

This isn’t the first time the Mate 60 has made headlines since its late August launch. In September, the US government sought more information about the Mate 60 Pro’s 5G Kirin 9000s processor reportedly developed specifically for the manufacturer. Its debut shocked industry experts who questioned how the company could make such a chip following sweeping efforts by the United States to restrict China’s access to foreign chip technology because of perceived national security concerns.
