Haha... nawab fag... so much nonesense of "independent foriegn policy" and back to bending over ... to the saudis n americans.. history repeating itself folks.. nothing to see here.

Don't blame that one man.

This is a result of your policies of many leaders before him.

Now there is so much US involvement in your country that you cannot change that so soon. It will take at least a decade of heavy work in the dozens of fields before you could remove the US yoke off your heads.

BUT

A wise man in your Foreign Affairs would use this as a negotiating card for energy guarantees for Pakistan in return for not trading with Iran.

Something that interests Pakistan.

While at the same time, look into compensating Iran with additional trade rights, or special privileges for Iranian exports.

Both the parties get what they want; Chankyaniti 101. :)

I only try to do justice to my moniker, to observe, even when I know it is futile.

This project has disaster written all over it, with sanctions if it goes ahead, with unaffordably high price of gas tied in to the price of oil when gas prices are falling, and with the lack of money.

And yet we keep talking about it as if it will help solve solve our energy problems. Even if financed, and with a lower price of gas, and with no sanctions, this pipeline cannot alleviate the huger gas shortages looming over us. It can mitigate the situation somewhat even in this ideal conditions.

Even if you manage to come to the table with this deal, you will need to focus on three things:

1- Pricing point: sanctions means more costs for Iran which means they will charge a good amount of money.

2- The quantity of gas you want and how auxiliary sectors for using that gas to generate energy manage to develop with significant investment from Pakistani government (additional gas-based power plants).

3- The security of the pipeline: even if you manage to get the above two in your favour, Iran will not take responsibility for any loss of gas once it crosses your territory. Which is something they are correct upon not taking the headache.

Your pipelines will be laid out through one of the most notorious and insurgency-hit areas in your country, which means your military will be stretched thin to protect these assets which would cost billions again. With no transit partner to subsidize your costs with transit fee, it will be an uphill task to invest and maintain such a pipeline.

For a country like Pakistan, you can do what the Gujarat state government has done; Put massive solar plants in the Thar desert. It will need investment but it is worth it. The plant in Gujarat generates 600MW in this phase; as per government plans, this will be further trebled in the coming years.

You share some of the sunniest geography in areas bordering Rajasthan and southern Punjab with India.

Why not invest in alternate energy?

It is a calculated risk but it is something in which many countries that have expertise in alternate energy sources will help you. Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark etc have a significant component of energy from natural renewable sources.

They can help you out.

Its all BS.. read the report prepared by the previous govt.. the sanctions or bans are on "oil products" not gas... armenia, turkey and central asian states are already buying gas from the gas company with which the deal was signed with.

A good time to ignore/leave USA, why would you compromise with such national development?

Well if US doesn't want you to buy regardless of what its other allies buy, it will put pressure on you.

It is called 'Do it because I am telling you to do it-- or else....'.

I don't know about Sharif's new foreign policy but it seems that he is quite pro-US.

You really don't get foreign policy, do you?

They've been stuck with US for 50+ years which involved in heavy US assistance to their country. Infrastructure, system, foreign policies, defence, etc etc.

It isn't easy to severe such ties so easily for Pakistan.

Why do you think their leaders (all of them whether Zardari, Musharaf or Sharif) never went against US in international affairs?

It is not easy to understand their foreign politics because you have remained neutral and largely so for your benefit.

Pakistan has never remained neutral in global geo-politics and has always taken a stand throughout the history. Sometimes it has benefitted them very well and other times it has come back to haunt them.
