Intolerance debate: Dissenting Hindus branded traitors; Muslims told to go to Pakistan, says Congres

[INDIAPOSITIVE]

Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government of 'curbing freedom of speech and expression' in the country, theCongresson Wednesday lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for attacking those who did not agree or were not in tandem with the Centre.

"Freedom of expression is the greatest power in a democracy. But these days if a Hindu speaks out against the government then they are branded as a traitor and if it's a Muslim then he is told to go to Pakistan. So does one's love for the nation stem from their feelings towards Modi ji and the BJP?" Congress leaderPramod Tiwaritold ANI.

Backing Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi"s statement attacking the Prime Minister for intolerance, Tiwari said that democracy was at threat if one"s patriotism towards the nation was measured on their feelings towards the government.

Echoing similar sentiments, Congress leaderPL Puniasaid the government on one hand spoke about upholding freedom of speech and on the other they took down the people who opposed their ideologies.

"The major difference between India andPakistanis that they don't enjoy the freedom that we have as they have been seeing more of a dictatorship," Punia told ANI.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha during the discussion on intolerance in the country on Wednesday, Rahul had said that India has been successful because the people have had the freedom and space to talk and urged the government to listen to the voice of the people.

and India was definitely far ahead of us when it came to freedom of speech and expression, but with what's happening lately in Pakistan and India I think that trend is set to reverse unless Indian people remove BJP from power.

There are some level of narrow minded people still infesting Indian politics. They are everywhere, in all the political parties of India. Majority of educated Indians abhor such mentalities and I am hopeful that it will only go downwards in near future.

Congress has a different definition of dissent and traitor.

When Mani Shankar Aiyar and Salman Kurshid was seen on Pakistani TV asking for help from Pakistan to topple the elected government of India, the Congress saw it as Dissent everyone else saw it as traitorous.

The irony of the thread is a person who was saying there is freedom in pakistan is now threatening another one to throw into India.

I think their are valid explanation for suicides

The media itself is responsible for politicizing Farmer suicides just to generate trp
If you look at the stats for the whole country
Then you will find that out of 120000 suicides that happened in year 2014 in India a number which looks alarming, but on per capita basis is lower than most western nations,
Around 18500 were Farmer commited suicides in 2014
Now given the fact that their are 700 million people involved in agriculture and allied industry in India, then these number look a lot less

We really need to be worried about the 102000 non farmers who kill themselves since they form only 550 Million of the population, yet are responsible for 85% of suicide


An engineer in Bangalore commuting suicide, because he was laid off , a Business man in Delhi killing himself because he suffered a loss in his business, doesn't create the same level of sensation than a bunch of farmers killing themselves in Maharashtra

These people don't pay any taxes, they get free water, free electricity and subsidized fertilizers, they get minimum support price from the Government for their produce.

This is the reason why their suicide rates are 1/6th the national average

As far as student suicides are concerned

Well their is a simple explanation for this
It's either parental pressure for good marks or
In case of suicides in IITs, IIScs and other institutes of higher learning, its more to do with a student from low caste getting admission not on the basis of marks but because of OBC quota, and then killing themselve because he cannot compete with intellectually brilliant students who got admission on basis of talent
