DHAKA, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed confidence that the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping would usher in "a new era of intensive cooperation" in trade, investment and other sectors between the two nations.

Hasina made the comments Tuesday ahead of President Xi's visit to the country. "We are very happy and feel honored that President Xi is coming to Bangladesh. I believe that President Xi's visit will also be more important for South Asia," she told Xinhua at her official Ganobhaban residence in the capital Dhaka.

Speaking highly of the Bangladesh-China ties, the prime minister pointed out that the relations between the two nations are underpinned by "the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existance, Spirit of Good Neighborliness, Mutual Trust, Confidence and Non- Interference into each other's internal affairs."

Hasina reaffirmed that Bangladesh strongly adheres to one-China policy and supports China on issues related to its core national interests and efforts to safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Chinese president's visit comes at a time in history whenBangladesh is about to break free from the clutches of low-level equilibrium trap and move into a brand-new frontier of investment, industrialization, ecological restoration and prosperity for all, according to Hasina.

"China has become our largest trading partner and we consider China as a trusted partner in realizing our dreams too. China is the leading generator of many our mega-projects in terms of finance, capitalization and technology," she said.

Noting that Bangladesh-China relations are now framed within a comprehensive partnership of cooperation that reaches into almost all possible sectors, she said, "We are planning to elevate the relationship to a newer height with the much-awaited visit of President Xi Jinping."

Hasina said cooperation between Bangladesh and China has gained maturity in past decades, but there are huge potentials for future expansion of the two countries' engagement in fields such as development of infrastructure and for that matter, investing in emerging sectors like ICT, ago-prosessing and electronics.

Hailing China-proposed Belt and Road initiative, the prime minister said her country is now working to connect growth centers of the country with the rest of the region in South Asia and create a single economic contiguity between South Asia and Southeast Asia.

And this "would be host to greater integration with East Asia and connect the three ecosystems to the rest of the world through our seaports in the south," she added.

The prime minister expressed her appreciation for China's support to Bangladesh's efforts in attaining sustainable development while welcoming Chinese companies investing in the country's emerging sectors like textiles, leather, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, shipbuilding and agro-processing, among others.

"We are on the verge of launching the exclusive Economic and Industrial Zone in Chittagong that would be a landmark event in our economic, investment and trade cooperation. We would like to encourage Chinese investors to invest in these economic zones as a developer or as an individual investor," she said.

I am a big fan - we've taken assistance from India, Japan and China. All are important to Bangladesh - Japan and China as development partners and India as a strategic partner in our own backyard - a neighbor that surrounds us on 3 sides.

Whether you like India or not, only an idiot would deny the facts. That India is a big player in this region is a fact and not up for dispute. How people look at that role (positive/negative) depends on which side of the argument you sit on...but, India is not to be ignored. China and India are potential rivals...India wants to be what China already is...so your disdain is predictable as is your Pro Pakistan stance.

FYI, while you might not like Hasina, I bet you like Begum Zia - but, you'll be happy to know, she went to India a few years back to kiss modi's brown *** and to tell the BJP...'hey, guys we love you too'

You are not understanding what he meant.
Its better to have friendly relations ( even if its sometimes one-sided friendship ) with neighbours than having Indo-Pak relations...

This visit is good for Hasina's image. If some big deals really happen, people might take her association with India lightly. I think she is trying to make balance now, while her root will always be entrenched to Delhi.

Lets see what really happens in this visit. I think some investments will really happen as the PM is coming.

BD is solidly in the Chinese sphere of influence , BAL has not changed that.

BAL maybe beholden to India for political survival but there are certain things won't change for a while. That is in Asian sphere BD strategic direction will be calibrated with that of china.

BD will never get involved in Pakistan India issue beyond making innane statement. BD also supports Saudi position in Yemen does not mean we will even consider participation. China will not raise the issue as BD has no beef in this conflict.

China will not raise the issue as BD has no beef in this conflict.

True. That's Bangladesh's own internal affairs. We are more interested in the business side of things.

As long as the economic cooperation keeps going strong then there is not much to worry about.

Sheikh Hasina can't make any distance with Chinese Government even if She wants too. The Army is entirely dependent on china and Awamileague Government is dependent on the Good will of the Army because of its dubious legitimacy. Keeping All the facts in Mind, I would say Madam Hasina is playing her cards well. Very Well.

True. That's Bangladesh's own internal affairs. We are more interested in the business side of things.

As long as the economic cooperation keeps going strong then there is not much to worry about.

Zia is the two times former Prime Minister, Her Husband was also president who Started good BD-China relation for the First time after China's initial refusal to recognize Bangladesh . That is why both of them are frowned upon by Pro India group. Anyway Chinese President will make his way to Zia's house today though She doesn't hold any constitutional position.
