Intelligence agencies to tighten

AMRITSAR: Following recovery of gold
ornaments from driver of the Lahore-
bound Sada-e-Sarhad bus at Attari
on Thursday, the Indian intelligence
agencies have decided to keep a
close tab on the activities of
Pakistani bus and train drivers
during their stay in the country.
"The recovery of gold ornaments
could just be the tip of an iceberg,
and we have to go deep into it to
uncover connivance of others before
it is too late," said a senior
intelligence officer seeking
anonymity. He said all concerned
security agencies had been informed
to closely watch the Pakistani drivers
as soon as they enter India during
their travel up to Delhi and night
stay in the country apart from
seeking details of their local
contacts.
Sources, having access to the
statement of Hamid Khan, driver of
Sada-e-Sarhad bus, informed TOI on
Friday that the bus driver had
admitted that he would have
received a commission of Rs 10,000
on successful smuggling of gold
ornaments from India. "However, we
are of the view that the commission
could be up to Rs 25,000," said
sources.
Going back on their previous
disclosure that 360 grams of gold
was recovered from driver Hamid
hidden in a special cavity under the
steering wheel of the bus, the
Indian customs officials on Friday
said the net weight of gold including
two necklaces was only 110 grams,
valued at Rs 2,62,000. "We have
calculated the mass after deducting
the weight of glass and other
stones," said a customs official.
Meanwhile, Border Security Force
(BSF) officials stated that customs
department shouldn't have allowed
Hamid to go back to Pakistan and he
should have been detained for
questioning. "It is a matter of
national security and not just a
violation of the customs duty," said
BSF officials, adding that there was a
need to probe the driver's contacts
in India. "Smuggling of gold
ornaments, especially when there is
not much difference in the price of
the metal in India and Pakistan,
seems to be incredulous. The gold
could have been handed over to the
driver as a reward or form of
payment for some favour," they
stated.
Meanwhile, assistant commissioner,
land customs station, Attari, Amanjit
Singh said it was due to their vigil
that the gold ornaments were
recovered during rummaging. "We
are taking all possible measures to
check such smuggling attempts," he
said.

Doesn't taking gold out of India actually help the economy? I thought import of gold was one of the biggest drain on our forex reserves?

.
the gold would end up being more costly in pak after converting pak rupees

. . .
They should be awarded for stabilizing Indian economy. Gold is curse currently for India

Honestly India and Indians are completely clueless and lame ducks when it comes to security and our environmental awareness. We are fools to think we are living nder peaceful terms.

we buy gold with our foreign reserves and so when it enters india already that amount equivalent left the country.in the article it is stated that commission is paid in rupees and most likely total amount is also paid in rupees(has to be verified). so dollars are not coming back anyway further we loose the customs amount.so its a loss to us.but as the article stated this can have security dimension too which is much serious.

not gold but gold imports.it drains our forex .smugling wont bring dollars back and we loose our customs too.

What's there to laugh??

Our Punjab is facing huge drug problem and its all comes from pakistan.

Very good point. Drugs is a huge threat to Punjab. And its quite obvious, if Pakistan was able to ruin the Punjabi youth, it could cripple recruitment of high caliber men from that state. The sad issue is that Punjabis themselves are also aiding in the drug trade and profiting from it while their brothers die and rot away

I think the russians terminated the arihant submarine guy.India has turned to the western alliance.Likely Russia will destroy any knowledge it provided for the nuclear submarine to make sure that India does not turn those weapons against them.

And where do they get rupees from? Now unless it is fake currency, then it is an entirely different matter. But barring that possibility, they can get rupees only buying it from India and paying for that in dollars (or any tradeable tender), right?

Whenever a foreigner buys something from India, it brings in hard currency, not our own rupees. (Since only we can manufacture our rupees.) Maybe the driver and point sellers got rupees, but as long as those rupees came from our govt mints, an inflow of rupees if equivalent to an inflow of whatever they purchased the rupees with.

Why is it that we are happy to pay Iran for oil in rupees? Because they will buy something from us with those rupees, which they can't manufacture, only we can. Think of this as any other export item. We paid for it in dollars, and then a Pakistani paid us back. He may have paid rupees to the seller, but as long as it is real currency issued by the reserve bank of India, that has already been paid for in dollars.

As for losing customs duty, I'm pretty sure we only impose duty on gold imports, not exports. (Since we are a gold importer). Same with Pakistan. So if anybody loses customs duties with this transaction, it is the GoP. Pakistan could have levied duty on that gold if it was purchased on the world market, but when smuggled from India, they can't.
