Insight: Unable to copy it, China tries building own jet engine

^ refer the above article.. it does say WS-10 is not an identical copy... but also do notice how recent orders for the 'inferior' al-31FH have exponentially increased.. notwithstanding the complete unreliability of ws-10 engines..

The WS-10 engine is not related to AL-31 at all, if you wanna troll, then you better suggest it is a ripoff of the American engine rather than the Russian one.

Both China and India are trying hard in this field. China is actually one step ahead as they have integerated this engine with their planes.
While kaveri is now being used for navy ships and has been only left for ucavs and light planes. how about a joint program. maybe the high iq people and low iq idiots will be able to come up with something usefull.

The WS-10 jet engine has passed its ground test since 2005, did Kaveri pass its test yet? Not even close.

Kaveri engine has passed all tests including high altitude test and on testbed. Yes the problems remain which are a bit low thrust. But these problems are now unfixable. Its better to design a new engine.

They are planning to make a new engine by using some of the design from the engine that powers the Rafale. So I am guessing after India gets its first Rafale or after the ddeal with France is signed we could see further development.

Are you talking about what is written on this dish? If so, I think, if my chinese is good enough, that it means the "Type certification" in December 2005.

small changes doesn't make WS-10 & Al-31 different , it's copy this the way china does . china has history of copy so anyone can guess.

Man work with French will not get India anything. No technologies will be transferred to India. Joint ventures are only good when work is shared like the MTA program. France is not interested in letting India know its engine designs. Infact no country in the world is. So we have to suck it up and do it on our own.

More orders for Al-31s don't means that WS-10 is not working. China has hundreds of jets already installed with Al-31s, its producing more and more newer jets, thus they not only have to bring in new WS-10s, but they also need engines for the older fleet. That is where combination of both come into play. They order more AL-31s to keep replacing their older jet engines, but add them to new jets being produced which are critical for their modernization as they can't stop manufacturing planes to wait and let WS-10s get mass produced, which will take time.

So, they are getting WS-10s in new J-11Bs, testing it with J-10B and getting AL-31s to equip J-10s which they are producing in numbers, plus new prototypes get tested with WS-10 too.

Its a mix game, but China will need a few more years when they can truly start mass producing these engines in different variants.

Taimi Bhai why didn't we go for the AL-31s & instead went for the RD-33 ? The former offers quite a bit more thrust (& in terms of other performance factors) when compared with the latter with not very significant changes in dimensions of the engine ?

Yup because India doesn't have aircrafts/facilities to test the engines in. Another reason the engine had problems because of.

Lol who told you that. India has ground facilities to test the engines in GTRE. Isro has abilities to test worlds biggest engines.

but we don't have experience with jet engine testing and facilities , you can test well only if you have experience of particular technology.

Yes but we didn't have them when the research started, we didn't have aircrafts to test the engines on. So in the beginning we were dependent on the Russians.
