INSAS: Packing more punch - Indian Army prepares to switch to new rifles

Dont kill the lizards just for fun..Its sadistic..

None has died so far...not even injured.

Also it is used by my son and his cousins to make circle marks on tree and fire for target practice or fixing balloons and firing at it!!

They had the right intentions. The delivery was way off.

The LMG only has a 30 round mag as compared to 200 rd boxes of other 5.56 lmgs.

The carbine never worked properly, leading to imports and the smaller round for MSMC, defeating the purpose of INSAS: a family of weapons using the same universal round.

Lets hope the next family of rifles doesnt end up like INSAS did:

over time, over budget, and under performing
1.INSAS LMG came with 30 round mags not because our designers couldn't design 100 round or 200 round box mags, but the army asked for 30 round mags. IA has always prefered 30 round mags for its lmgs. Eg:Bren LMG
2.AMOGH Carbine,a part of INSAS Family is in services

And it looks cool too.
3.MSMC was developed to replace the sterling smgs and not because INSAS Carbine failed to deliver. INSAS has helped MSMC design.
4.INSAS is without doubt a success,as several serve in the services, with improved ones being inducted also.

The biggest problem for the DRDO is the MoD insistence that it work with PSU's for production. Take any DRDO project, i.e. Arjun etc, give it to the private sector for production & then judge the DRDO. In most cases, it is not the design that is the problem but poor workmanship. The blame needs to be apportioned correctly.

True, but what private company back then wanted to, or even had the capability to manufacture something like an Arjun, even an INSAS? Even today there aren't many.

Projects like the FICV Program are promising though.

I'm talking about the rule as it exists even now, the Arjun's problems largely are to do with poor workmanship. DRDO is not allowed to approach those parties in the private sector that could be of help, Bharat Forge, L&T come readily to mind. Not in any way suggesting that the private sector is a panacea for all problems, just that blame for any failure should be spread wider than the DRDO alone.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

It would be nice to compare the quality of lets say a L&T finished product to a OFB one.

Sandy, why aren't the orders from armed forces big enough? Surely they have lot of requirements.

dear,

The Order Books are much bigger now. But the issues and the problems are varied. To start with the DPSUs, then bodies like OFB, DRDO etc are behemoths; which the Govt. feels forced to keep employed. Then there are Ministries like the Ministry of Heavy Industry and the MoS, Defence Production that have to maintain their long running feudal fiefdoms. Also the insidious role of the Labour Unions; of which the DPSU unions are some of the most powerful. Remember that a guy called Kanshi Ram cut his organising skills teeth in a DRDO union!
Finally; the Pvt Sector (save a few) themselves did not show any interest in getting involved and doing the Developmental Work required. Now they see the big-bucks involved.
