The Navy’s sole aircraft carrier INS Viraat, staging trials following a four-month refit at the Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) at present, will remain in service for a few more years, affirms Captain Biswajit Dasgupta, who took over command of the flagship of the Navy in December last.

“There’s no plan to pay the ship off at the moment. It will have life left for a few more years,” Capt. Dasgupta told the media aboard the vessel, docked outside the shipyard, on Saturday.

Hardly 100 metres away, in the yard’s building bay, construction was apace on the country’s first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC), which will be named INS Vikrant on commissioning.

Two-phase refit

Capt. Dasgupta said the ship’s current round of refit was undertaken in two phases. With the first nearly over, it would sail to Mumbai “maybe a couple of weeks from now for some essential repairs of its machinery and equipment at the Naval Dockyard, a specialised organisation,” before returning to active service by the middle of the year.

“Ever since its service with the Indian Navy, its dry-docking [11 in all] has been done here [at the CSL] essentially for hull and machinery work and minor jobs. [The] CSL is a capable shipyard. And, certain things are common to both merchant vessels and naval ships,” he said.

India acquired the British commando carrier HMS Hermes in 1987, renamed it INS Viraat and placed it under the Western Naval Command in Mumbai.

The steam-propelled ship, displacing 28,000 tonnes, would have its propulsion, sensors and armament done up at the Naval Dockyard, said Capt. Dasgupta.

Sea Harriers

On the vintage Sea Harrier jump jets forming the air complement of the carrier, he said the service of the aircraft, which had undergone limited upgrade a few years ago, was being utilised optimally. “Yes, it is true that the Harriers are ageing, but we’ve operated with foreign navies and the jets have done well.”

While the Viraat remained in refit, the Harriers continued to operate from naval air station INS Hansa in Goa. “We get them on board when we sail into the sea.”

On aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, which India is buying from Russia, he said there had been some delay in inducting the platform “which would hopefully join us in a year.”

The Navy’s original plan of retiring the Viraat and the old Sea Harrier fighters suffered a jolt as timelines slipped inordinately on the price negotiations and refurbishment of INS Vikramaditya. As the 44,500-tonne carrier looked ready for induction in June last, a boiler accident threw the induction schedule off-gear all over again.

The Navy is pinning its hopes on inducting the platform before the end of the year.

Its a waste of money... its a WW2 ship with outdated aircraft. Even the latest Israeli AA missiles wont change much.

It should be transformed into a museum asap.

I wanna see the latest Mig 29k to fly off the INS Viki in Indian waters!

Am guessing you know better than the commanding officer of the Indian Navy....

Russia is really wrecking Indian plans by delaying Vikramaditya.

really???then what is viky in your opinion??a cold war era partially burnt carrier cruiser???every AC needs to take major repairs after every long deployment.thats why India wants 3 AC's,when 2 will be deployed,3rd will be in dock for repairing.

Just PR. The harrier is outdated. Fact. The Viraat was built during WW2. Fact. It has even exceeded its max. lifespan.

The Gorshkov was commissioned in the late 80s thats not so old for a ship. It was in a bad condition but 70% have been refurbished and now its a real carrier. Furthermore it hasnt been used by the SU.

The Viraat on the other hand was built during WW2, we are the only nation using such an old carrier. The Harriers are outdated. Thats a simple fact.

Factually WRong !!!!

Viraat was completed and commissioned in 1959 as the Royal Navy's HMS Hermes..

After Viraat's Refit its life will be untill 2018 ... Indian Navy does not keep ships in the fleet just for PR....

This picture has no relation with any ship, but this is the first thing that came to my mind after reading the story

Right but construction started in 1944, 3 yrs before independence.

The IN just wants to keep an AC, thats why. This thing is outdated, has outdated planes and even uses WW2 era flak guns.

It is just a usual refit not a life extension. And don't go with its look bro. It is still very usufull though especially in CAS & gnd attack when our marines wil conduct operation. Until IAC2, it would remain a trust worthy good plateform for IN.

Its a life extension, the IN is trying desperately to keep at least one carrier operational somehow. Those Harriers are limited in range, lack in air refueling and have outdated avionics. The Viraat would have to get very close to enemy territory and remember that its defense systems are outdated as well, except of the Barak SAM.

Its outdated and served its life but it doesnt have outdated flak guns. BARAK is there. Its just there in the navy for the prestige, I dont think operating it is going to be a HUGE help like what many think.

Both viks are different class of AC and operate different type of aircraft from their decks. Their landing and take off is totally different. And are they taking off harrier often from Viraat. If they are then aircrafts wont last till the ship.

I know about the Barak SAM^^ I was referring to the 40 mm bofors AA guns.

And I completely agree that the Navy just keeps it floating to have an AC till the Viki arrives.

But they could use it as a helo carrier if the hull is gonna make it. But the Harriers need to go. It would be a crime to let pilots fly these things in combat.

The only use would be to put them against Somali pirates.

We should reserve after discommission in 2017-18 for any emergency. In case of war it can be very useful as Helicopter career with anti ship missiles.

IN sea Harriers had an Avionics upgrade back in 2010 with Isreali systems....
The Defence systems of the Carrier are its Task force and its escorts .... not the carrier itself...
