INS Vikramaditya’s operation crippled

Barely a week after Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar witnessed the ongoing theatre-level naval exercise TROPEX-15 on board the newly acquired INS Vikramaditya , reliable information suggests that the aircraft carrier’s operation is crippled, owing to issues with its integral fleet of MiG-29K fighter jets.

Nearly 30 of the RD-33MK engines powering the twin-engine MiG-29K aircraft attached to the ‘Black Panther’ squadron have packed up ever since aviation activities got under way from the deck of the refurbished Soviet-era carrier that was inducted into the Indian Navy in Russia in November, 2013.

“The Naval fighter carries out high-speed landing by hooking on to any of the arrester wires stretched across the flight deck. In case it fails to hook, it should take off all over again. If an engine fails during flight, the fighter is forced to do a single-engine landing. But its power to take off just in case the arrester wires are missed is suspect. Therefore, the carrier doesn’t operate too far away from the shores,” a source said.

In other words, Vikramaditya remains tethered to the region — forced to operate within a 200 nautical mile radius of Karwar with an airfield in the vicinity, said a naval veteran familiar with the development.

Training still on

A senior officer, however, said flying operations and training of Indian naval pilots from the deck ofVikramaditya were being done in a phased manner.

“The aircraft is just too good and has a very powerful engine. To allay the fears of pilots, we have asked Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG to prove single-engine landing of MiG-29 K on board the Russian carrier Admiral Kuznetsov. This will happen in a fortnight,” the officer said.

As many as 21 of the 45 MiG 29K fighters ordered by the Navy have been delivered so far. Of these, some 13 have been accepted after trials.

The public sector aviation major Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has proposed to put in place requisite infrastructure at its Koraput unit for carrying out maintenance and overhaul of the RD33 MK engines powering the MiG 29K aircraft.

These are the growing pains attached to carrier operations, once the Russians have proven a single engine landing with their carrier the IN can withdraw such restrictions of operating within vicinity of a land base.

If carrier aviation was easy everyone would do it.


The Russians don't do themselves any favours though do they, at the same time they are claiming the MKI as a viable alternative to the Rafale and actively pushing for more MiG-29K sales to the IN their equipment is performing sub-optimally. And people question the Indian military's desire to not just diversify but actively move away from Russian equipment.

Don't be surprised if the NLCA is tested extensively before being declared operational for the IN for this exact reason- the only reason it is said to be (somewhat) safe to operate the MiG-29K in these conditions still is because it has another engine, the NLCA being single engined means if the engine cuts out you are looking at a disaster. Thankfully the GE engines are highly reliable and the IN is right to move away from the Russians in this regard.

What "extra research" costs will be associated by the Russian Navy performing a single engine landing? The IN isn't insisting on a redesigned engine.

Amazing, isn't it? And the most comical irony is that he frequently accuses Indians of being obsessed about Pakistan.

I saw that bro, and I don't doubt the capabilities of the MiG-29K, they truly are awesome carrier fighters but, once again, the reliability of Russian hardware lets them down badly.

So what it says here is that a Mig 29K with only a single operational engine left might not be able to do a touch and go. So long as both you engines are allright, there is 0 problem.I.e. not really a problem.

Well they are determining this with the OEM, if they are able to prove it is safe to do so then the IN will remove these restrictions.

Only 21 of 45 MiG-29K/KUB delivered and some have only recently been delivered to the IN so haven't actually been engaged in carrier training so we can say about 2 RD-33MK have been used per MiG-29K/KUB in just over a year, there is no way the IN has logged 4,000 hours (the stipulated service life of the RD-33MK) on these engines in the span of a year ergo hardware failure.
