INS Jalashwa to evacuate Indians

New Delhi has decided to press INS Jalashwa into service to evacuate Indians from Libya. Three more ships will also be used to ferry Indians from Tripoli and Benghazi to Alexandria in Egypt.

The INS Jalashwa is the third-largest warship of the Indian Navy, behind INS Viraat aircraft carrier and the newly inducted INS Deepak tanker, and is basically an amphibious assault platform designed to transport and land troops in enemy territory. It is lightly armed and has six medium lift helicopters.

Able to accommodate 1,500 people, the INS Jalashwa will be accompanied by two destroyers, which can ferry 200 people each. These are also being kept on standby for deployment to Libya, if the need arises, according to sources.

Designed to double up as a hospital ship, the INS Jalashwa has extensive medical facilitates, including four operation theatres, a 12-bed ward and a dental centre. Sources said the naval ship was on standby, and would proceed, as soon as the official formalities were completed.
The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday said in view of the “sharp and unprecedented deterioration” in the situation inside Libya, the government had decided to immediately commence evacuation operations.

The government has chartered a passenger ferry with a capacity to seat 1,200 persons for this purpose. “Scotia Prince is expected to reach Benghazi by February 27 and bring back at least 1,200 persons to Alexandria (Egypt) by March 1,” the statement said.

Why is no fleet replenishment tanker not being sent aswell to re-supply the fleet on the way instead of having to rely on friendly countries??

+are there any plans to launch a Special Forces mission to rescue Indian oil workers who are stuck deep in the desert and unable to move to Tripoli or Beharzi, there is talk such a plan is being drawn up by UK using the SAS and a C-130 Herc. Given IAF has recently received their new C-1300-30j Super Hercs and Guarud/Para SF/MARCOs are trained for such ops is there any plans/possibility of such an op being launched by GOI??

Good question, didn't IN just induct INS Deepak- the biggest replenishment tanker in ASIA, would have been good exp.

Any ETA on the Libyan (INS Jalaswa) fleet??

+ don't you think IN/MOD/GOI should start assembling a bigger fleet and sending to the region as the ENTIRE region is starting to flame up and many 100,000s of Indian work in this region and the sail time is long and the GOI's response was/still is very slow??

given GOI achieved this:

After the decisive Iraqi victory, Saddam Hussein installed Alaa Hussein Ali as the Prime Minister of the "Provisional Government of Free Kuwait" and Ali Hassan al-Majid as the de facto governor of Kuwait.[29] The exiled Kuwaiti royal family and other former government officials began an international campaign to persuade other countries to pressure Iraq to vacate Kuwait. The UN Security Council passed 12 resolutions demanding immediate withdrawal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait, but to no avail.[30]

Following the events of the Iraq-Kuwait war, about half of the Kuwaiti population,[31] including more than 400,000 Kuwaits and several thousand foreign nationals, fled the country. More than 150,000 Indian nationals living in Kuwait were air-lifted by the Indian government within a span of a week.[32] However, the Iraqi invasion was welcomed by the Palestinian Liberation Organization and some of the 400,000 Palestinians living in Kuwait. Alaa Hussein Ali was placed as head of a puppet government in Kuwait, prior to its brief annexation into Iraq.

During the 7 month-long Iraqi occupation, the forces of Saddam Hussein allegedly looted Kuwait's vast wealth and there were also reports of violations of human rights.[33] According to some independent organizations, about 600 Kuwaiti nationals were taken to Iraq and haven't yet been accounted for.[34] A 2005 study revealed that the Iraqi occupation had a long-term adverse impact on the health of the Kuwaiti populace.[35]

Why is there not this kind of thinking/will?? Come on GOI step up!!

We should buy at least 2/3 more Austin class LPDs from US for such humanitarian and evacuation role. They accommodate large number of people. Can also be used during Tsunami, emergency relief supply.

Agreed completely. But wasn't the jalashawa bought through the FMS route? It's a slow process and requires many approvals.
But we do need more LPDs. And the US is going to retire the austin class fleet within the next few years. So this is our best option by far. Especially considering we got the Jalashwa for 50 million dollars, and the new mistral class is going for upwards of 600 million. And the San Antonios for 2 Billion!
We need 3 austins ASAP.

Dude, I think FMS is the fastest way of getting weapons. INS Jalashwa is a good example.

You kidding me? Just take the case of Airforce harpoons. Applied for in 2008, approved last month. So first we have to go through all the hassles on our sides with CAG audits and all that shizz. And then their tedious FMS process. Jalashwa was quick, so was C130J, but it isn't an assured 'fastest' way. Atleast according to me.

Not sure about te Harpoon deal but FMS is considered to be the fastest. Same bureaucracy is there in other type of acquisitions as well. Compare it with tender process. There is no other way of buying weapons from US forces/govt.
