ALL YOU GUYS NEED TO STOP PLAYING ALL THOSE COMPUTER GAMES...
As mentioned by one of you above, the M4 platform and its varients like the HK 416/ 417 are now rapidly headed towards obloletion. Turkish army is heavily influenced by the US army which is why they are designing a copy of the m4. I think it will just be an exact copy save the external furnisher.
You guys need to understand a few basic facts.
1. A specific design of gun (refered to as a platform) can be made into any caliber from 9mm to 7.62. The AK, AR, HK, FAL, SA platforms all are produced in 5.56, 7.62 nato and 7.62 russian as well.
2. Ofcourse the design of the gun is important but the calibre of the bullet and the design of the bullet is far far more important. True, that the 5.56 based M4 has failed in iraq and afghanistan but the new design 5.56 bullets are working very well. So, again its a matter of bullet design.
3. You guuys need to understand the difference between assualt rifles and battle rifles. AR and Ak are assualt weapons while the G3 is a battle rifle.
4. coming to Pakistans needs, Pakistan Army does not need any change in the rifle that we use. the G3 outperforms most rifles in the modern world. IT IS STRUCTURALLY MORE SOUND THAT THE AR OR AK PLATFORMS! the terrain of Pakistan dictates that we have a good strong battle rifle, we already have that... the G3. No need to replace it with some stupid pea shooter.
5. The M4 and Ak has been popularized by holly wood and all those compu games that we all play.
6. the US is in the search to adopt a totally new platform as the M4 platform is not very reliable. google SCAR and read on it first before picking up a weapon based on how cool it looks. have u guys even seen all these weapons? leave alone firing them?
7. The AK weapon Platform is much much better that the m4 platform. but the AK ammo is not very good. But improved varients have very good ballistics.
8. In my opinion, the rifle of choice in descending order will be G3, FAL, AK47, SIG, M4.
9. Calibre preference in my opinion are:
1.) 7.62 NATO,
2.) 7.62 Russian
3.) 5.56 MK262
