A female flogging unit has been introduced in Indonesia’s Aceh province to dole out public whippings against women found violating the region’s Sharia law.
One of eight new female Sharia officers delivered her first punishment to an unmarried woman who was found in a hotel room with a man who was not family, AFP reported Tuesday. The victim’s behavior is considered a morality crime in Aceh, where violators often face public whipping with a rattan cane.

The officer, wearing a cloth mask and a brown, full-body uniform, appeared to hesitate before unleashing a burst of lashes on the woman’s back, according to the report. Officers who deal the lashes wear the uniform to protect their identities for security reasons.
"I think she did a good job. Her technique was nice," Banda Aceh Sharia police chief investigator Zakwan told AFP of the new recruit.

Aceh is the only region in Indonesia, the most populous Muslim nation, to follow Islamic law, which calls for women to punish female transgressors, the outlet reported.

Public flogging is also used against men and women found guilty of gambling, extramarital sex, and homosexuality, according to The Jakarta Post. The floggings can include more than 100 lashes; the victims sometimes faint from the pain.
The punishments have proven controversial, with human rights group Amnesty International calling the canings “cruel, inhuman and degrading” public spectacles, according to the outlet.

Indonesia’s president reportedly issued a call to cease public whippings. But a limited autonomy deal made over a decade ago between Aceh and the central government allows the province to follow the religious law.
Safriadi, head of Banda Aceh's Sharia Implementation Unit, told AFP that the female officers were trained in the correct technique to limit injuries and “have no mercy for those who violate God's law.”

Sharia Law Horror: Indonesia Hires Female Floggers to Publicly Whip Women for Morality Crimes

Over the past few months, more women in Indonesia have been charged under sharia law for morality crimes such as cuddling in public or alleged “intimate relations” outside marriage.
“Morality crimes” range from gambling, alcohol consumption, and gay sex in the conservative country. This already happens in neighboring Malaysia.
A total of 12 people were arrested late last year, and all had served several months in prison prior to their punishment of public whipping.
The job has always been done by men, until Indonesia decided to recruit female enforcement officers to punish offenders. Eight women, all sharia officers, agreed to be floggers and were trained to perform the "appropriate technique"of public whipping.
“We train them to make sure they’re physically fit and teach them how to do a proper whipping,” sharia police chief investigator, Zakwan, said in an interview with AFP.
“It’s kind of an indoctrination that we give to them so they have a better understanding of their role, have no mercy for those who violate God’s law,” he added.
Carried out in accordance with Sharia law, the latest brutal ordeal was handed out yesterday, after a couple were arrested following a police sweep of a hotel in Sumatra.
A masked woman approached the unmarried woman, who was caught in a hotel room with a man, and then unleashes a flurry of lashes, proving herself as the newest member of the first female flogging squad in Indonesia.
“I think she did a good job,” said Zakwan. “Her technique was nice.”
The controversial punishment enraged rights activists and generated a heated media debate. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have condemned such punishments as “barbaric”, “inhumane”, and tantamount to torture.
But Indonesia’s sharia police chief investigator insists they are “far more lenient” than ultraconservative Saudi Arabia and some other Muslim nations.
“We’re not aiming to hurt people by whipping them,” Zakwan said. “The most important thing is the shaming effect on violators and spectators so they do not do it again.”

Indonesia’s Sharia police have a unique take on diversity that might seem odd to Western ears: its historic all-female flogging squad.
Banda Aceh Sharia police chief investigator Zakwan, who uses one name, told Agence France-Presse this week that he was thrilled with a new recruit’s lashing performance.
“I think she did a good job. Her technique was nice,” he said for an interview published Tuesday.
The piece by Haeril Halim detailed justice being meted out against an unmarried woman who was found in a hotel room with a man.
“The masked woman nervously approaches her target, shuffles into position and then unleashes a flurry of lashes — proving herself as the newest member of the first female flogging squad in Indonesia’s Aceh province,” the piece reads. “But despite her reticence, she persevered and delivered her first flogging.”
AFP noted that the city of roughly 220,000 has three shifts of Sharia police patrolling throughout the day.
Other crimes that may result in beatings with a a rattan cane include the following: adultery, drinking alcohol, having gay sex, and gambling.
