Indonesian state-owned shipbuilder PT PAL has offered a variant of its 163 m landing platform dock (LPD)-like multirole support ship (MRSS) to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Navy.

The offer has been made in response to requests for information (RFIs) from the Emirati Ministry of Defence.

The variant being offered is largely similar to the concept developed as a proposal for the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), but with customised features as requested by the UAE Navy, said the company in response to questions from Janes .

The requested customisations include flexible payload bays for modular mission systems and automated launch-and-recovery systems (LARS) for rigid-hull inflatable boats (RHIBs) and landing craft. The vessel can also be converted quickly into a floating hospital that can be deployed for humanitarian missions, the company added.

The 163 m MRSS was originally developed as part of PT PAL’s commitment to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed with Malaysian shipbuilder Boustead Naval Shipyard (BNS) at the Indo Defence 2016 exhibition in Jakarta.

It is derived from the 122–125 m multirole vessels that are in service with the Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Laut: TNI-AL), which are in turn based on a design from South Korean company Dae Sun Shipbuilders.

Our extension Philippine Defense Resource posted a new resource page for the Additional Light Lift Aircraft Acquisition Project of the Philippine Air Force, which aims to procure additional NC-212i Aviocar light lift aircraft from PT Dirgantara Indonesia.

These aircraft will be replacing the remaining 5 or so N-22B/C Nomad utility aircraft with the 220th Airlift Wing, and has been in negotiation for several years now.

Funding for this has finally been made available so expect the project to start soon.

The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has released a SARO worth Php624,000,000.00, or 15% of the budget for the Additional Light Lift Aircraft (PTDI NC-212i) Acquisition Project of the Philippine Air Force last 17 February 2023.

The SARO release means that an award is expected to be made to Indonesian Aerospace (PTDI) which the DND and PAF are negotiating with over the past 4 years.

6 aircraft are planned for acquisition through a G2G process between the Philippine and Indonesian Governments, to beef up the PAF's light lift capability and join the 2 other NC-212i aircraft acquired a few years ago.

Once in service, it is expected that the PAF would start retiring their ageing fleet of GAF N-22B/C Nomad light utility aircraft.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced it had awarded the Indonesian shipyard PT PAL an AED1.5 billion (USD408.32 million) contract to supply a “multimission vessel” during the IDEX 2023 show being held in Abu Dhabi from 20 to 24 February.

PT PAL confirmed to Janes that the contract was for a 163 m multimission support vessel, which is a landing platform dock (LPD). The plan is to start construction in Indonesia in 2024 with the completed vessel delivered to the UAE Navy five to six years later.

The contract was announced without a value in July 2022 as part of a comprehensive economic partnership agreement between Indonesia and the UAE, although sources told Janes at the time that it had not been finalised.

PT PAL said that it could not comment on the systems and armament that will be fitted to the ship, but Emirati companies will be involved and it will supervise the process.

PNG seeks to resurrect languishing CN-235 transports

The refurbishment of two CN-235 transport aircraft, if it can go ahead, would greatly boost the airlift capacity of PNG's military.

In 2023, Papua New Guinea (PNG) will attempt to restore its two CN-235M-100 airlifters to operational status, after years of disrepair and neglect.

As part of the country’s 2023 national budget, $5 million has been allocated to restore them, after years of similar efforts failed to draw full resourcing.

The PNG Defence Force (PNGDF) originally procured both aircraft in the early 1990s from Indonesian Aerospace, in a bid to enhance its transport capability in a country where airlift is king due to an underdeveloped road network and remote inland areas.

Jakarta, IDM – PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) is one of Indonesia's national defense industries that participated in the International Defence Exhibition (IDEX 2023) exhibition at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) on February 20-24, 2023.

PTDI's participation in IDEX 2023 is one of the efforts to strengthen cooperation with several strategic partners, penetrate new contracts/jobs, and maintain an existence in the global market.

On this occasion, a number of PTDI's superior products such as CN235-220 MPA and N219 Amphibious were also displayed.

For the UAE market, PTDI is also committed to continuing to support the needs of UAE Air Force, especially those related to CN235 and N219 products.

"The closest activities that will be realized are the Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) work of the CN235 aircraft owned by the UAE Air Force and also the potential upgrade of the CN235-100 aircraft to CN235-220," said PTDI President Director Gita Amperiawan as quoted from PTDI's press statement.

Indonesian Aerospace has completed conversion work of 3 Malaysian CN235 from transport version into MSA version (Maritime Patrol). These planes are also ordered from Indonesian Aerospace in late 1990's.
