Indonesia is willing to extend its support to the Philippines with the ongoing peace agreement in Mindanao.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo said in an interview aired on ABS-CBN News Channel that Indonesia may serve as a mediator over the Philippine government and the Bangsamoro people.

"I think that the best approach is through religion and culture, and this can be done through dialogues and if necessary I think it is possible for Indonesia to be a good intermediary to follow the discussions of the Bangsamoro. I think we have the experience on intermediaries like this," Widodo said.

Indonesia has been an active facilitator of the peace talks between the government and Moro National Liberation Front during the 1990s.

Malaysia currently stands as the third party with the ongoing talks between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

President Benigno Aquino III recently formed a national peace summit that would look into the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law.

Some of the lead convenors of the said summit are Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, former Chief Justice Hilario Davide and prominent businessman Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala.

One must admire the growing relationship between Indonesia and Philippines. I think both are natural partners for regional stability. Congratulations to both parties...!

. .
Cheers, how about pushing the rebel to reform and assisting them to take on a new form as local party and participate on the local election, so they can get legitimate support to govern the Mindanao province (if the people choose them).

.
Well i still take Indonesia over malaysia. Malaysia was contributor the conflict so having them as thrid party anything is an insult to peace building
Don't point the gun at us, it is your country (with incompetence leadership for decades) who can't solve your internal 'affair'.

Indonesia is , in my personal objective opinion, the best mediator and facilitator for the peace agenda with the Bangsamoro initiative. For one, the Philippines and Indonesia already have successfully settled the border between the two archeplagos. Second, Indonesia has a successful record in peacefully solving ethnic, regional insurgencies -- and am sure Jakarta can be pivotal in Manila's own Bangsamoro initiative.

I believe also Indonesia is perfect for the job because there are no conflicts of interest, which had plagued Malaysia's facilitator role, unfortunately.

Objectively speaking, both you and he have a point. For one, the Philippines Government's past initiatives have led to unfortunate humanitarian crises in southern Mindanao, specially in the ARMM (Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao), however, the issue of corruption within the ARMM was one barrier for inter-regional development in those specific provinces. For one, if you study the role of Nur Misuari, his tacit allotment of such activity should have been basis to replace him. Unfortunately if you actually research and analyze the governing style of Misuari, he ran the ARMM like a warlord.

Second, you cannot deny that the MILF , MNLF , and especially Nur Misuari, were given training, military arms equipment from Malaysia. In fact, it was so widespread that when the recent Lahad Datu incident took place in Sabah, soldiers of Orang Suluk background went and retrieved hidden arms stache in Sabah.

So the Filipinos' fears and concerns of Malaysian duplicity is not without substance, as Malaysia has , undeniably, taken advantage of the Philippines' internal situation. And for this reason, this historical issue of Malaysian conflict of interest, I think it will affect Philippines' confidence with Malaysia. The more reason why I think Indonesia is the better candidate for facilitator role. Besides, i personally believe that Indonesia and Philippines should eventually form a defense alliance partnership in the medium to long term future. Both the Philippines and Indonesia are the heart of Austronesia --- and their combined populations is already nearing 400 million. The future of Southeast Asia lies in the Malay Archipelago --- and the Jakarta-Manila Nexus is key here.

No comment about some view toward Malaysia involvement in Mindanao peace process.

But i do believe, since there are several rebel groups in Mindanao that fight for authority to rule this province, they can actually fight in democratic process through local election. Philippines Government, need to facilitate this transition and help them with all the legal and administrative requirement to participate in local election. Once they agree to reform themselves, Government can and must disarm this rebel groups and let them continue their strugle through the democratic channel.

Aceh with their GAM would be a good case to look at.

Our Vice President Yusuf Kalla is a good person to send to Mindanau, he comes from South Sulawesi, very near from Mindanau island. His experience in Aceh Peace Process also can be very useful, I believe Mindanau Rebel Groups will be very happy as well to see him as a mediator.

There was a key phrase that was touted in Davao when I visited for business several years ago. "Mindanao is the Land of Promise"

From my visit , I can see that there is so much potential for Mindanao, it is a very large island , roughly the size of Sulawesi Island. And Mindanao has rich deposits of iron ore ore, gold, silver, copper, tin. The land in Mindanao is exceedingly fertile , and most of the island is not even developed completely. The human resource potential is high, it just needs to be directed properly , developed responsibly. The population of Mindanao is over 25 million (already almost equivalent to the population of the entire Peninsular + Eastern Malaysia). The population demographic in Mindanao are mostly young, majority in the 15-20 age range. Due to this natural strength, if the Philippines finally endorses a lasting peace with separatists, there's no reason why the whole of Mindanao , especially in the south such as South Cotabato, Lanao Del Sur, Sultan Kudarat, cannot develop. In fact it will. The southern part of Mindanao is exceedingly rich in natural resources --- and the only barrier to development here is this armed rebellion. Tho i am happy to see that the peace talks are continuing and if it bears fruit --- the future is bright for the Philippines, and for the surrounding region.

True. Internal conflict has hindered development and progress, not only in Philippines but all over ASEAN. As long as people can see progress toward peace and stability, they can see hope. Without peace and stability there's not much can be achieved.

For our brothers in Philippines, can you share with us what the Government & the rebel groups actually proposed in the peace talks?

Thanks buddy ! I also read that the OIC is now supporting the peace process in Philippines with Bangsamoro. Looks like developments are going well. Good to see this.

A top official of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has underlined the support of the 57-member countries' group for the peace process between the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), hoping the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) will draw support not only from Congress but from the Filipino people.

In a press conference after a courtesy call on Senate President Franklin Drilon on Monday, OIC Secretary General Iyad Bin Ameen Madani said passage of the BBL will open the door to the much-sought peace in Mindanao.

”We are here in the Philippines to underline the support of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation to the current peace process -- the CAB (Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro) and BBL,” Madani said.

”We underline our optimism that this agreement be ratified and will hopefully also be accepted by the people of the Philippines and that it would find its way to putting an end to the conflict that has been with us for many decades,” he added.

Madani is on official visit, and met with representatives of the MILF as well as the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and other faction groups of the MILF in Davao City last Sunday.

”We also made it a point to touch base with the different branches. And I think we reached the point where everybody wants the settlement. Everybody wants peace. And all of us here in CAB and BBL want this passed by Congress, approved by Filipino people,” Madani said.

Madani hopes also that his visit would encourage different factions and armed groups in Mindanao to accept the peace process “and look forward to be part of it.”

”I think most of these groups are committed to the peace process. It think the OIC can have inputs for all these parties to get involved in the political process,” Madani said.

MANILA - The Ad Hoc Committee on the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) at the House of Representatives will vote on the proposed measure next week, the panel's chairman said.

Ad hoc committee chairman Rufus Rodriguez said the voting will proceed as scheduled on Monday and Tuesday.

"We are on time. We are on track. We are going to have the voting on May 11 and 12. All the members of the ad hoc committee will be there. I believe that dream to have lasting peace in Mindanao will be achieved through the BBL,'' Rodriguez said.

Lawmakers urged: Consider peace council report on BBL

MANILA - Malacañang urged lawmakers to consider the peace council's report on the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) as Congress deliberates on the bill.

The Palace pointed out the council's recommendation that the BBL be passed.

"We echo the council's observation that the BBL is 'overwhelmingly acceptable and deserves the support of all Filipinos.' We note further their comment that the BBL should be passed, that to set it aside now would be 'imprudent and wasteful of previous efforts,'" Communications Secretary Sonny Coloma said.
