Indonesia: We Don't Need No Stinkin' F-16, Will Take Su-35 (Video)

Originally appeared at The Sentinel

Jakarta announced that Indonesia intends to buy 10 Su-35 Flanker-E supermaneuverable multirole fighters, according to Indonesia’s Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu. Indonesia is getting ready to buy the Su-35 with armament and avionics systems and chose the aircraft over the F-16V and the Eurofighter.

“The purchase of the fighters must be done smartly, starting with a few, as purchasing everything at once means it will be delivered five or ten years down the line anyway,” Ryacudu said, as quoted by the Kompas daily newspaper.”

In September 2015, Ryacudu announced that Jakarta has shopped for new fighter aircraft to replace its old Northrop F-5 Tiger II fighters. Last January, Ryacudu planned to visit Russia in April to discuss further details on the procurement of the fighters. However, the minister might schedule this visit as early as late February of March to further discuss the matters.

Russian Sukhoi Su-35 Flanker

The Indonesian air force’s fighters fleet is comprised of Su-27SK/SKM and Su-30MKK/MK2 aircraft, as well as F-16A/C Fighting Falcon.

The Su-35 is a 4++ generation heavily upgraded version of the Su-27 multirole fighter and has been developed by Russia’s Sukhoi Company between 2003-2008.

Capable of reaching speed of Mach 2.25 (2,390 km/h) with a service ceiling of 59,100 ft, the Su-35 is a formidable fighter. It has 12 hard points and a 30 mm GSh-301 internal cannon with 150 rounds.

It was first introduced at the Paris Air Show in 2013. Its cost is estimated between $40 to $65 million.

The Russian Su-35 in Syria

Russia began combat mission in Syria with the Su-35 earlier this month. The Su-35S provide air superiority and protect Su-24 bombers against possible threats. It will also support the Syrian Army during ground operations by providing tactical strikes as it can drop guided bombs.

  • KAB-500L laser-guided bomb
  • KAB-1500L laser-guided bomb
  • FAB-250 250-kilogram (550 lb) unguided bombs
  • FAB-500 500-kilogram (1,100 lb) unguided bombs

it's a wise choice :yahoo:

the range of the Su-35 is leagues better than the F-16, and Indonesia has a lot of air space to control.

let's just hope they can keep them in the air. only 10 Su-35 means only 5 will be ready to fly at any given time :enjoy:

Buying from Russia means Indonesia can still have an independent foreign policy while using those fighters. West will block parts of Western aircraft to Indonesia if they don't do what the West wants.

can you name a few times where the U.S has done this :what:

Embargo on selling spare parts to China's black hawk ring any bell??? it literally ground our Black Hawk fleet after Tien An Men square event, maybe you're too young at that time but it's fine now, we have make our copy as Z-20:rofl: and American wouldn't dare to complain over the copyright issue. there is so many other cases of American embargo to other countries that you can google it.

American like to offer military equipment as sugar for baby but the one dare to defy them then embargo is the punishment. We Chinese are glad to be independent of American for weapon acquisition so we can do what we want in SCS and they can't use military embargo as dirty trick on us

.
Talking about embargoes, is there a reason why I can see some interesting posts in Live View but receive an Error message when I try to actually read the Thread?

no, not aware of that.

but our relations with China has always been frosty

and as for copyright I don't care. you all steal designs from everybody

China shamelessly steals fighter jet technology from Russia - PravdaReport

There other case with J-8II upgrade kits, US supposed to deliver 50 kits to upgrade our J-8II (HUD, Radar and some sensor) but also they unilaterally cancel the contract...after that we don't see US as trustworthy military supplier, the sooner we discover US truth color the better is for us. imagine if we still dependent on US for military equipment, you Think US will let us develop independently our J-20 or J-31? American will force us to buy F-35 like Japan and the rest of the world while itself retains the total control of other nation technological development. Nowady China might not have the top high tech weapon but US can't neither lecture us regarding our military development, basically we're not at the mercy of US.

Say what ever they want:rofl:.everyone copy others, Soviet and US not only copy, they steal literally the Scientists from defeated Germany in WW2...LMAO...

First of all, people need to realise F-16 and Su-35 is two different category fighter.

F-16 is a multirole fighter while Su-35 is an air superiority fighter.

Buying one rather than other could be outside political decision, and depending on what they are replacing for, Su-35 could be a logical choice if what the Indonesian is looking for a Air Superiority Fighter replacement.

Do aware, Indonesia is a political ambiguous country which do not have any preference to any bloc or alignment. This is actually not much people can talk about.

That's a smart, strategic decision on part of Indonesia. A move toward greater sovereignty and security. This is as political and strategic, by the way.

Yup, Indonesians are a smart bunch. Besides, I do love how the Su-35 demonstrated super-maneuverability during the Paris air show.

Besides, Indonesia might prove to be a worthy ally to China in the long run to expel Western influences from the SCS...

Also, Russia's Su-35 has shown its capabilities in the Syrian theater, which must have had a positive impact on Indonesia's decision.

From China's perspective, it is a demonstration of independent, pragmatic decision-making. This sort of countries China can work more harmoniously than countries that often tend to act as proxies.
