#Indonesia villages reference #China’s poverty relief experience

Indonesia is taking inspiration from China to alleviate poverty in their country. China is supporting hundreds of villages in Indonesia to become self-sufficient in food and agriculture. Our reporter Silkina Ahluwalia went to one village on the way to becoming a completely sustainable and self-reliant community.

Should hv been done ages ago.

Rate of poverty elimination in china is frankly jaw dropping. Its criminal how little academic interest is given to it.

April this year I was reading an entire book focused on how gov programs can lift people out of poverty (Good Economics for Hard Times). Its crazy, the Authors studied programs in India, in America, in Egypt... even indonesia's PKH program was studied. Yet there was not a single mention of China in the entire book!

I was like "ffs, 50% of global poverty eradication in last 4 decades happened in China!"

Its tragic, but I bet once Indonesia has a lot of these villages, westeners will come to study and praise it... while conveniently ignoring that we were guided by China's success.

Simple, the west will use the word "communism" and people brains stop working.

"2020 marks the final year of China's fight against poverty. Over the past 40 years, China has lifted over 700 million people out of poverty, representing over 70 percent of global poverty reduction. Now, China's poverty alleviation tasks are almost complete.May 21, 2020 "

China accounts for 78% of the world reduction of the number living in poverty

Indonesia is like of having only 265 million population, but we are able to reduce the poverty for almost 40 percent of it... comparable to India number

You should see, our efforts to reduce poverty in Papua is often being claimed as Genocide and war against minority rights (in the past it was happened in Timor, and you can see where Timor right now). The same case happened in China though.

Yes, though I would still admit at times the military is benefiting from the security situatiin and that many Papuans do not get fair treatment.

Despite that though West Papua development indicators is flat out better than Papua New Guinea. Note how we recieve much less "foreign aid" in Indonesian Papua than PNG does.

I'm sure Indonesia will be vindicated in 20 years (be under democracy for 40 years, just as long as it was under Sukarno & Suharto dictatorship).

I do hope Otsus is improved rather than just extended. As it stands it is dysfubctional and everyone knows it.

How did China reduce poverty, can anyone explain in detail, I'm very interested in poverty reduction and we are trying very hard in my country.

You should know, where Papuan civilization level back when they joined Indonesia in 1960, Hollandia (now Jayapura) is just a little tiny village/township at the time. Not even the Dutch had explored Papua wholly during hundred years of their rules. China style development is come with stick and carrot policy, and toward their minorities they tend to bring a lot of carrot actually to bribe them and entice them on how China society is working.

Actually, i prefer to bring Papua into regular province of our, but security concern still very appalling (though a far cry from their criminal laden PNG neighbor)

I do not disagree. Indonesia has done a good job of economic development of Papua.

I also prefer if Papua can be turned into a regular province, but alas, that is still 2-3 generations away.

My support for Otsus to be changed though, is not 9nly because of problem with central gov implementation, but also because as it stands local Papua gov have complete authority over education and healthcare and they've utterly destroyed the system with nespotism and gross incompetence.

If you read the Papuan studies by Bobby Anderson, there are teacher in Papua who never teach, civil servants who are constantly drunk, and Health workers who pocket all the Puskesmas operational funds and live in Jayapura instead of their assigned district.

There needs to be a mechanism that ensures the quality of civil servant and healthcare worker in Papua. Of not no matter how much development happens, Papuans will not feel it because tgeir education and healthcare is horrible even by Indo standards

- Modernize and give training villagers.
- Set up marketing for villagers. No favoritism.
- Select competent and non corrupt leaders through merit (democracy is lousy at this) and oversea the development of village. The leader in question, behave more like company CEO managing the village than a typical politicians. Farmers need not to worry about marketing and purchasing, just worry about producing.
- Make sure your supplier doesn't shit or favoritism on the certain farmers. Provide loan not grants, for farmers to modernize.
- Is better to specialize the region to certain crops, instead of jack of all trades to lower cost. Also easier for leaders to manage.
- Villagers have access to experts and can do stuff like soil testing etc.

(I am doubtful because as far as i know, there are cultural differences like money attitude, or good paymaster and ideological differences)

Source: Visited China village before. Maybe my observation is wrong.
