Indonesia to buy 24 refurbished US F-16 fighters

The United States plans to supply 24 refurbished F-16C/D fighter aircraft to Indonesia, the presidents of the two countries announced in Bali on Friday on the fringes of an Asia-Pacific summit.
It was the second militarily significant announcement of President Barack Obama’s ongoing nine-day Asia-Pacific trip.

The upgraded Lockheed Martin Corp F-16s will give Indonesia a “much-needed” capability to protect its sovereign airspace, the White House said in a “fact sheet” that emphasized the relatively low price tag, put at $750 million by the Pentagon.

Under a separate tightening of ties with Australia, US Marines will start rotating through northern Australia next year, eventually growing to a 2,500-strong task force, the two governments said during a visit by Obama before he flew to neighboring Indonesia for the summit with leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Jakarta was seeking more capable F-16s able to carry out operations “in the outermost border regions of Indonesia.”

The air force’s existing fleet of 10 F-16 A/Bs cannot do this, the agency said in a mandatory notice of the tentative deal to the US Congress. It put the estimated cost at $750 million. The aircraft are from excess US inventory.

“The proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by improving the security of a strategic partner that has been, and continues to be, an important force for economic progress in Southeast Asia,” the notice to lawmakers said.

The White House said the plan was to start deliveries by July 2014, as requested by Jakarta. The deal would would help boost Indonesia air defenses significantly “without compromising the defense budget and other national priorities,” it said.

The transfer of F-16C/D models to Indonesia may raise new questions about Obama’s refusal to meet Taiwan’s standing request for 66 new F-16C/Ds of its own to help deter China, which regards the island as a rogue province.

The Obama administration in September notified Congress of a proposed $5.85 billion weapons package for Taiwan, including upgrades of 145 F-16 A/B fighters but none of the C/D models that Taiwan has sought.

Obama said on Thursday in Canberra the US military would expand its presence in the Asia-Pacific despite budget austerity, declaring the United States was “here to stay” as a Pacific power that would help shape the region’s future.

The F-16 deal involves the overhaul of 28 United Technologies Corp Pratt & Whitney engines including spares. The aircraft will have the most advanced “Modular Mission Computer” produced by Raytheon Co, along with improved radar, avionics and the capability to carry and field more advanced weaponry and sensors, the White House said.

Our JF17s could have delivered better performance, at a lesser cost. Just look at the amazing response it has gotten at the recent Dubai 2011 airshow. Western airshow commentators were talking about the aircraft's remarkable manouverability and the diverse range of weaponry that has already been integrated with the aircraft.

This does give them a larger and more potent F-16 fleet though, so I'm happy for our Indonesian brothers. And this doesn't close the door on JF17 sales to Indonesia, as only a few months back, a senior Indonesian minister specifically mentioned the JF17 as an aircraft they were looking at.

You can't compare F-16 C/D jets to JF-17, sorry to disappoint you.

Yes! ure absolutely right cuz those are old versions and can't match a brand new technology which is JF17.....:)

Chinese srolls will be heart broken of this news. They thought indonesia was in their lap after warning usa about ozzy amrika pact. It was just lip service to please china. I m again repeating all small countries are making good use on usa-china rivalry. Good for them.

Indonesians seems to like American Gadgets. Some Indonesian airlines ordered $24 billion dollars worth of planes from Boeing. Largest ever order for Boeing.

F-16 is a three-decade old platform(just like Su-30s and MiG-29), while it's been modernized significantly, it's basic structure and airframe is still the same. JF-17 is just at the beginning of it's life, and is liable to be upgraded throughout it's service-life.

On some things like Beyond Visual-Range warfare(BVR), JF-17 packs a longer-range punch to older AIM-120 AMRAAMs widely used throughout the world, but is a little behind the latest AIM-120Ds currently under development. JF-17's SD-10A/B BVR missiles do pack a longer-range punch than Russian R-77s that India uses though, and given the enormous investments China is making in this area(and Russia's continued budgetary woes), this gap is likely to continue increasing.

Our tests pitting the JF-17 against the F-16 have been very wonderful as well, and the JF-17 scored a number of kills on the F-16s(dogfighting). JF-17 is an advanced lightweight fighter, it's smaller airframe gives it a smaller RCS(Radar Cross-Section) than the F-16s.

So as you can see, there are areas in which the JF-17 actually exceeds the F-16. Ofcourse, there are areas where the F-16 exceeds the JF-17, it carries more fuel and has a greater range(JF-17 flies 1800 km on internal fuel, 3000-km with drop tanks), and things like that. Pakistani Airforce officials went on record saying the JF-17 is around 80% as capable as an F-16(we fly older Block-15 F-16s as well as the latest Block-52, but Block-15 is known to be the most manouverable of all F-16 blocks), JF-17's Block-II may very well exceed the F-16 in almost all areas with it's ECM advances and the rumoured AESA radar. Eventually Russian aircraft would get AESA as well, but for now they seem to have had various problems. Russian specialists have gone on record saying China's more advanced at aircraft micro-electronics than Russia at the moment.

Suhkoi-30 is thirty year old? This shows how much you know about aircraft.

Why PLAAF did not replace its 30 year old aircraft to raptor killer and modern JF-17?

Sorry to say we have already done the comparison many times.... only difference is that Indonesia will get old F-16 while we have compared JFT with blk-52 and Eurofighter.. much to your disappointment on every single occasion JFT came out winner.

Offering F-16 to Indonesia is clear signal of insecure feeling in anti JFT camp.

US and indians are working over time to hurt the sales of JFT... through various channels and since long time ago both states are weighing F-35 to counter JFT.

Shame on Pakistan's President and Prime Minister for failing to put a counter offer to Indonesians.

I also heard in the news that usa is dumping all there f-22's and replacing them with JFT,this is prime reason that they are still engaged with pakistan.
