Indonesia acquires four Wing Loong I UAVs from China
Ridzwan Rahmat, Singapore - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
25 February 2018

Key Points
  • Indonesia has acquired four units of Wing Loong I UAVs with surface strike capabilities
  • Aircraft will be inducted with the country’s first composite UAV aviation squadron in West Kalimantan
The Indonesian government has acquired four strike-capable Wing Loong I medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicles (MALE UAVs) from Chinese state-owned aerospace and defence company Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC).

A contract for the aircraft was signed in 2017, and the UAVs will be operated by the Indonesian Air Force’s (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Udara’s: TNI-AU’s) Aviation Squadron 51 (Skadron Udara 51), multiple sources from within the TNI headquarters in Cilangkap confirmed separately with Jane’s between 22 and 25 February. The Wing Loong I UAV seen here in PLAAF livery. Aviation Squadron 51 is based near the city of Pontianak in West Kalimantan, and the unit shares a runway with the Supadio International Airport. The squadron currently operates Israeli-made Aerostar tactical unmanned aircraft system (UAS) equipped with stabilised, gimbal-mounted electro-optic and infrared (EO/IR) sensor for surveillance missions. With the induction of the Wing Loong I, the unit will be Indonesia’s first composite UAV squadron with two different aircraft types.

The Wing Loong I was developed and manufactured by AVIC’s Chengdu Aircraft Design and Research Institute (CADI) subsidiary. It has a length of 8.7 m, a height of 2.8 m, and features a wingspan of 14 m. The aircraft has a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 1,150 kg and a payload capacity of 200 kg.

The UAV is powered by one piston engine, and has a service ceiling of 7,500 m (24,600 ft). It has a maximum range of approximately 108 n miles (200 km), and an endurance of about 20 hours. Payloads that can go on board the Wing Loong I include the DH-3010 search-and-rescue (SAR) radar, and the AVIC Luoyang LE380 EO/IR turret.

Wing Loong I is smaller , two pylon only and small payload of 200kg.

Wing Loong II is bigger, much more powerful engine, 6 pylons and up to 900kg of payload and 30hrs of endurance but far more expensive but still cheaper than US Reaper.

And the jane report wrongly of wing loong 1 only 200km range. 200km is using radio control operating range, it loitering time is up 20hrs and equal to 2000km flying range. If equipped with GPS/Chinese Beidou, it can go even 2000km away from operator but currently only Wing Loong 2 is equipped with that feature and i believe only Beidou system is available to bind user under Chinese influence.

The video posted by onebyone is WIng Loong 1. You can see its much smaller.

This one is WIng Loong II and you can see its far bigger compare to a person.
Nice, Thanks for your informations..

CH-4's and Winglong's performance in the Middle East is great advertisement for Chinese drones.

.
Interesting. After Malaysia, Indonesia is now diversifying their military procurement. This is a right strategic move. Also good for regional defense compatibility and overall relationship.

But it's been diverse, though. Since what, a while now? Well, albeit not in the same amount. We have F-16s flying alongside the Flankers, for example. Western and Chinese systems on ships. Korean submarines.

All good...

you guys probably sold them weaker wing loong so that Indonesia doesnt get too strong that it can repel,China in south china sea struggle...smh

It seems a nice drone. I hope one day Indonesia can make its own attack drone.

Indonesia has no business in SCS. But don't touch Natuna islands. It's ours. ;)

On progress. There is an ongoing cooperation with TAI Turkey to develop UCAV based on Anka with planned max operational altitude reaching 40.000ft. PT.DI even plans to show working prototype within next 12 month.

“Kami berharap prototipe drone MALE tersebut dapat kami perlihatkan kepada TNI AU dalam 12 bulan kedepan,” ujar Arie Wibowo, direktur produksi PT DI. Arie menambahkan, prinsip yang digunakan adalah basis dari drone Anka, namun ditambahkan beberapa perangkat tambahan yang spesifik sesuai kebutuhan TNI AU.

As if USA and Russia don’t sold monkey version? This monkey version is still better than the crap heron offer by Israel which cannot carry out attack on its own.

Turkey is not so good in drone technology. There is a reason why Indonesia buys Chinese wing Loong I. The automation and autonomous inside wing Loong I is unrivaled.

Iraq operator commented Chinese wing Loong I is easy to operate and has many search and destroy function which reduce operator burden. It can land and take off by itself in most condition unlike US and Israel counterpart which heavily dependent on operator to input command from most of its operation.

I doubt turkey one has such high level of autonomous function.

Report said that Turkey is the only one that willing to share their tech on UCAV production with Indonesia. So there we go..

I don't think it's wise for China to selll the drones to Indo or malaysia even if it's the export version. Both countries are anti China.
