I don't think Indonesia has rivalry with China they just signed multi billion deals and also signed landmark free trade treaty. They are modernizing their army

At best we will buy just 1 squadron to replace F5 squadron that have all been grounded and I dont think Rafale will fill the squadron, most probably second hand Eurofighter from Austria if the price cheap enough or continue with SU 35 deal since we have already signed the contract if Biden administration doesnt impose CATSAA anymore.

Prabowo, our Mindef, maybe wants to have French submarines but I dont think Jokowi will let it to happen since Jokowi administration is very pro local defense industry.

For submarine, I still think DSME from Korea will still win since we will build the subs step by step and the third submarine will be wholy built it in Indonesia.

For frigates, it is more likely we go to Denmark and Japanese with both of them offer localization where Denmark is the most generous one with all two frigates will be build in Indonesia completely.

Indonesian people in majority just wants government continue paying KFX/IFX program and committed to the program instead of using much money for imported fighter jet. Any way, it is difficult to buy French product amid last Macron unpopularity in Muslim nations, including Indonesia. Not easy politically.

Indonesia is also facing economic difficulty and doesnt pose any immediate conflict, so better we focus on the economy and our defense industry development as 6 years from now KFX/IFX program is planned to have started the mass production phase inshaAllah.

Indonesia is actully making the right purchases with the Rafale but next they should add another fleet of SU-57 and F-16s.

While developing on the side it's domestic production but it is good making both purchases and own production. Indonesia is going the right direction

Damn that's expensive as hell. for 25 biliion they could probably build their own stealth jet and have some money left to start the next one.

Well, We have seen under Jokowi administration that his administration prefer buying weapons from our own local industries, this is why you dont see any big order for foreign equipment were taken by his administration for the last 5 years.

After he appointed Prabowo to be our Mindef, he has stated two time to him and his other ministers publicly to focus the spending for local industry. The last one he stated it was in July when US government approves the sales of Osprey to Indonesia (not yet sign a contract) where he criticizes that order intention.

Not to mention current situation where this pandemic has suppressed Indonesian economic growth into a negative territory that make the economy posted the first recession since 1998 in third quarter. Jokowi actually has made a compromise with his rival, Prabowo, in this matter by allocating defense budget as the second biggest post in our 2020 and 2021 budget, just behind infrastructure development budget. Next year defense budget which is 10 billion USD is already the highest in Indonesia history

Prabowo also recently get political disaster with the fact his right hand in his party get busted just several days ago for corruption case while serving as fishery minister in Jokowi second term administration. IMO, he will be more careful not to do any controversial order since many of his strong supporters come from Islamist group. We know what happen with controversial Macron statement right ?? And also Indonesian in general has tendency to prefer their government to spend majority of the spending on local defense equipment products, particularly if local industry has the substitution for that need.

Our defense budget is not much by the way and this administration also doesnt like to take much loan to finance foreign defense equipment order. There is a history of such thing for 5 years of his first term and in this Jokowi second term I predict the policy will likely to remain like that.

Dont forget about the economic pressure that my country is going through so far due to pandemic. Jokowi is also very famous with his economic centric policy and very much stingy on non economic related budget, even he doesnt give much R&D budget as well to our research agencies and very stingy on KFX/IFX program that was started from previous administration under SBY.

Prabowo is for sure an ambitious person in term of defense spending and has said about his support on more defense spending if he become President during 2019 Presidential election campaign. Despite so, he is now serving under Jokowi administration who doesnt share similar view with him regarding the matter.

I don't think US will help South Korea to build F-35 competitors. Even Israel Lavi canceled because of US sanction.

F-35 like jets is not something everyone can get as long as money is paid.
Indonesia is not US ally at all. Not possible.
