INDO-Portugal Defence Cooperation

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Defence Cooperation between the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of India and the Ministry of National Defence of the Portuguese Republic was signed on 07.01.2017 in New Delhi. The MoU is an enabling framework which seeks to foster bilateral defence cooperation including high level, working level and educational and research oriented exchanges. This also includes exchanges of views in various areas such as security challenges, maritime security, UN peacekeeping operations and as also defence industries.

This information was given by Minister of State for Defence Dr. Subhash Bhamre in a written reply to Dr. Shrikant Eknath Shinde and others in Lok Sabha today.

So on one hand India is trying to enhance relations with Portugal, on the other hand Pakistan is trying to woo the new UN Secretary General Antoio Guterres of Portugal by spreading stories of how India took Goa from them by coercion.

Portuguese premiere Antonio Costa has his roots in the former Portuguese colony in India where his grandfather was born and his father spent most of his life.

The 54-year leader recalled that his father - Orlando da Costa - had spent most of his youth in Goa, which was then under the Portuguese rule.

Orlando da Costa his father Luís Afonso Maria da Costa's side and of Portuguese and French on his mother Amélia Maria Fréchaut Fernandes' side, he was born in Lourenço Marques, Mozambique, a Portuguese colony at the time.
