ISLAMABAD: At a time when Pakistani and Indian prime ministers were in Mohali discussing ways to strengthen the nascent process of re-engagement by steering it clear of likely hurdles, a Pakistani High Commission employee was picked up by Indian security agencies from Delhi on Wednesday in a sore reminder of the years of bilateral tensions.

Both sides were keeping the issue under wraps to prevent it from queering the peace pitch.

Despite passage of two days since the Pakistani High Commission worker was picked up, nothing is still known about his identity, the circumstances surrounding his detention, or the charges against him. Dawn

A source, speaking to from Delhi, disclosed that he was not a diplomat.

“He was one of the low ranking Pakistani staff,” the source said and added that he had been under surveillance for some time.

According to late night reports, the man was released on Thursday. In Islamabad the Foreign Office confirmed the release.

Foreign Office spokesperson Tehmina Janjua confirmed that one of the High Commission employees had been detained, but would not say anything about who he was.

She expressed the hope that the issue would be resolved bilaterally.

A diplomatic source alleged that Indian intelligence agencies routinely harass the staff of Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi.
