CHENNAI: Tebma Shipyards today said its indigenously built dredger is ready to be inducted in the Indian Navy. According to the company, this is the Indian Navy's 'first Dredger'.

"The dredger sailed out on March 25, 2015, after successfully completing all the trials in ship builders yard to Mumbai for its formal induction to the Naval fleet under Western naval command," a Tebma Shipyards statement said.

The vessel is designed indigenously and built at Tebma's Malpe facility in Karnataka and it is a self-propelled grab-hopper dredger with capacity to hold 300 cubic metres of dredged material, it said.

It has been designed using 90 per cent of local materials "as a part of Make in India efforts," it said.

The company had earlier delivered various tugs and special purposes barges to Indian Navy and the dredger was its 22nd vessel delivered to the latter, it added.

Whats the use of a dredger for Navy. In my opinion dredging is mainly a commercial object which should be confined with the civilian authorities only and not something which should come under the purview of defence ministry.

Keeping the Naval ports open and deep enough for large ships to dock.

You do not want to let in civilians into a place where Billions of $ worth of Ships and Submarines are kept, not to mention state secrets.

Thanks for the info. So basically this vessel will be used for upkeep and maintenance of the Naval ports that under IN's control.

Pretty much. It is also useful if you want to build and artificial island on the sea. Kind of like what China is doing in the SCS.

It is used to remove the sedimentation or silt brought by the rivers and other factors in to the sea from sea bed and make the port deeper so that big ships can enter the ports, or simply for removing sand from the sea bed

I think he was talking to sell dredging ships to commercial firms that develop real estate and artificial islands. Like how Dubai has that Palm Jumeirah island.

Our shipyards should compete for shipbuilding contracts from rest of the developing and developed world.

That is a complete waste of money. But maybe we can look at linking some of our islands with each other. But since this is expensive, we have other priorities.

India should get large crane ships, it would be a huge help in salvaging ships and submarines stranded on and under the seas.
