Indigenous cannon system(s) for Pakistan Army

Love it! 6400 mil traverse easy as pie. Perfect for a star formation on a hilltop firebase.

Really nice weapon in my view.

Which one are you referring to, gunner?:smokin:

. .
D-30, like the title of my post.

2A18?
We dont have the Russian version, why are you referring to GRAU?

i love the all round traversing capability.

In 2003 the U.S. didn't even bother sending its heavy artillery regiment into Iraq - the troops were stripped of their weaponry and used for crowd control instead. Why would Pakistan find 155mm howitzers more useful against terrorists than the U.S.?

Because we can move it around easily all the way up to where the Taliban are. The US did not send heavy arty maybe because it was logistically more difficult to do so and other fire support capability was available. I am sure S-2 can add to it. Also Pakistan does not have to toe the US line on such things. Each Army has their own way of deploying artillery and do so as appropriate for them.

Lolzz..they are not that bad.

2010's calender not '09s, anywaz i was following this since 2006 so it was kinda discrete for me.

I think the first evaluation for the 300mm systems was indeed around the 2005-6 timeframe along with WS-1.

Well indeed it might be but i was talking about our plans to get involved.

Don't you think the AR-2 would have been a better option?

Enigma,

To be very honest with you, I do not know much about the AR-2. I just recall being a part of a discussion around when the WS-1 evaluation came up around 05/06. I was not even sure how we went over to A-100 eventually. But in either case, it is a good capability to be had.

No Probs.
AR-2 was though a better option.

This A-100 things is part of what we call arty's "shaping the battle field" things.

So fire power you know, plays a vital role, A-100 therefore was a viable option.

I remember reading something about the Chinese working on redesigning the launch tubes on the A-100 to allow for greater ease of re-loading.

Not sure if that would have applied to the AR-2 as well.

Ya you are right, there were changing the circular tubes to rectangular shape, one of the reason they say is ease of re-loading, let me see if i can get the link, i had it somewhere.

Here you go:

.......In addition, China is now undertaking technological and structural upgrades of both the A-100 and AR-2 multi-rocket launch systems. These upgrades may include replacing their tube-shaped launchers with box-shaped launchers, as the former are much more expensive, cannot be quickly and easily reloaded and are more difficult to maintain. The similar AR-1 MLRS, which are fitted with box-shaped launchers, no longer require transloaders to load the rockets.

" I am sure S-2 can add to it."

We anticipated a conventional battle with regular Iraqi army forces and that would mean that our divisional systems would very much be in play.

In fact they were. Here's the OrBat as of 1 May 2003. Some of these units arrived after the fact (4th I.D. (Mech) would be an example.

On Point-OIF OrBat 1 May, 2003

In any case, I counted just oodles and oodles of towed 155, SP 155, and MLRS, to include three battalions by the Brits.

Those missions have been downgraded and altered over time. Most artillery units deploy with some-not all of their weapons now while maintaining other stabilization responsibilities.

Hmm, I read in The Economist that a thousand men of one regiment were sent in without their artillery and used for crowd control - they even had a picture.

Since no one picked up on my tracked mortar question yet this thread is obviously populated by people with intimate knowledge of Pakistani artillery systems and their secrets, I conclude that Pakistan does indeed have such a weapon but it is being kept "under wraps", both to hide it from India for a future war and to extort more money from the U.S.

The Russians have a tracked heavy (240mm) mortar system. Cheap, powerful, easy to build, and extremely effective. Does Pakistan have anything similar?

Keep guessing, you'll reach somewhere!

to extort more money from the U.S.

That's so encouraging, indeed.

I'm not sure of your point. First you wrote that the U.S. didn't deploy 155mm artillery in OIF. You were very, very wrong and continue to be.

We've tubes there shooting illum and excalibur and both are effective combat multipliers.

So too Afghanistan. We are beginning to field ammunition generating low-order explosions. This will further enhance effect and generate more-not less-use.

Great! Then you've the Chinese copy, Type 59-1, I think. Anyway if it's the towed 122mm with a travel-lock at the muzzle and 6400mil traverse firing a 48lb projo about 16 klicks then we've got the same weapon.

I think the Chinese have slapped this barrel on a gun-chassis and have an SP version now similar to the 2S1.
