PANAJI: Indian Navy's indigenously-built aircraft carrier would be launched on August 12 this year, while INS Vikramaditya (purchased from Russia) will arrive before the end of 2013, Union defence minister A K Antony said here on Saturday.

"INS Vikramaditya is going to be a reality, as promised the ship would be delivered before the end of this year," Antony told reporters after the commissioning of fighter aircraft MiG29K into Navy at INS Hansa here.

"While on one side Vikramaditya is coming this year, on August 12 we are going to launch indigenous aircraft carrier at Cochin," he said, without elaborating further.

Asserting that the country was giving a thrust to modernisation of defence forces, Antony said, "Navy modernisation is one area where we are going fast-paced now.

"Almost all the navies of important countries want close cooperation with the Indian Navy," he said, adding that "Indian Navy is well-prepared, most modern and (one of) the most capable navies of the world.

"(Over) Last many years, there has been well-planned induction wherein we are replacing old platforms and adding new ones," he said.

St. Antony, please cut the jingoism and tell us the truth!:pissed:

He is telling the truth. Launched doesn't mean that it will be serving in the navy, or even ready for trials. It simply means that the ship will be pushed into the water. @Capt.Popeye can shed more light on this.

INS arihant was launched in 2009, although its powerplant will only start functioning sometime this year.

After it is launched, a lot of work remains to be done. After that it will undergo sea trials, and THEN join the navy. So we can expect another five years, which means about 2018, which is what the anticipated year of commisioning is.

Generally how much time it take to build a medium size A/C? 40-50k ton class?

You are quite correct in that asessment that you have made.

While I am not familiar with the exact state of construction of IAC 1; I can tell you that the "float-out" plan in August indicates that the underwater structures of the hull will be completed by then. As a matter of fact; that part was completed at the time of the last "float-out" save for installation of the propulsion shafts. Because of the delay in installation of the Gear-Boxes. This indicates that this also ready for completion. Which is entirely credible.

The "float-out" launching does not mean that the Carrier is completed or ready for comissioning. That will not happen till the "fitting out" is completed.

That based on shipyard capability, its experience, its skilled man power(where we are heavily lacking),modern equipments using for ship building, time delivery of imported parts and indigenously ordered parts. So it differs from country to country. for US it will take some 4-6years, For france it will take 6-7 years, for india it will take 8-10 years or even more.
