India’s worst-ever water shortage, and the corruption surrounding it

The monsoons are late this year combined with high temperatures....This is a serious issue. I only posted a few articles about the water crisis in India right now. There are hundreds of articles for local water problems in India right now.

I am monitoring the situation since it could impact Pakistani security. The PAF is ready to make holes in any dams....should India violate the Indus treaty. Best thing for India is to divert water away from Bangladesh toward the Deccan and south. They won't fight back.

Those countries that have wasted their budgetary allocations on unnecessary things whilst sustaining on grass all this while can only pray to the rain gods. People here think twice about producing a movie via crowdfunding, and we have countries asking liberally and shamelessly from their tax paying and remittance sending foreign diaspora to help them construct water management projects. The fall from grace couldn't be any more stark. With no fuel to drive the engine forward, smelly hydrogen sulfide is all that emanates from their rear orifice, being entrapped in their neverending cocoons of their own doing.

Water linking project is in progress. Water diverted from Indus water treaty will be linked to the project. It should alleviate the problem to some extent. Water is precious by the way. Totally agree with the contention here .

Here in canada where water is abundant, it is charged around 2-3 canadian dollars a ton. a few years ago, my city gave away rainwater barrels to help reduce water consumption. over the years, we have saved so much water that the city has to raise water price because they are no longer able to collect enough money to maintain the water infrastructure.

control the god damn population
Maybe India should build desalination plants in lieu of buying Rafales. India needs to re-evalute its priorities. It too can benefit from peaceful relations with Pakistan....Reduce defense spending and spend it on water infrastructure.

don't worry your little heart about us, worry about yourself... corruption is scorching india more than ever now that 40% of your parliament is full of corrupt the core thieves and criminals! 8-)
Isn’t there more in Pakistan? Your whole government system is corrupt.

Do you think surplus water states will agree to share water with deficit states?Already water disputes between states, it would be political unpopular decision amongst farmers.

Indian nation problem, not a democracy problem.
More centralized power would be needed for that, but we all know that so many people oppose that..

where have you been for the last couple of years, the most powerful man in Pakistani politics is sitting behind bars, generals have been sent to jail, high court and supreme court judges aren't even spared from persecution on corruption. Pakistan is turning out to be a 180° opposite of india where corruption is the norm from the common indian on the roads all the way to top chor chowkidaar!

Will Pakistan return the favor if we do so? Highly doubt it.

Sure, but corruption in the lower echelons is more damaging to society.

it would not be a favor to us by any stretch of the imagination...india would only be doing itself a favor by reducing the war mongering and reducing the defense budget. you cannot take us on militarily, just get over it. only a massive civil war in Pakistan where the majority is rebelling against the minority would give you any hope of a victory.anything short of that will only repeat more February and March like humiliations for india. those civil war days are long gone and not going to return, india should stop wasting tens of billions of dollars in the hopes of somehow creating a civil war like situation in Pakistan...it is not gonna happen, get over that as well! you are better off by stopping the money wastage on a corrupt to the core indian military establishment and spend it on providing your people's betterment.

100% disagree. corruption in the higher echelons of society is far more damaging. What is worse? An average man stealing a bread or a president stealing billions...the answer is obvious.

India has two drainage systems one is the Himalayan drainage system which is perennial like the flood plains of the Ganges and the Brahmaputra, and the other is peninsular which more or less depends on the monsoon.

The flow in the perennial rivers is sustained by glacial melt water even when there's no rainfall.

Indian government is long envisioning linking the perennial rivers with the peninsular ones. It is by no means an easy task, the Indian subcontinent is divided in half by the Vindhya and the Satpura mountain ranges, and the peninsular area itself is a highland. You can guess how much time, effort and power it will require to undertake a task of such magnitude. 50 years at the very least.

Thr next best alternative is to adopt sustainable practices of water conservation aided by enabling legislation.

Addendum: And to clear the air, not all parts of India belong to the same climatic zone, for example it has been raining in my place constantly (more than less) for the last one month and monsoon is yet to start, while some parts of India are under the grip of heat wave and drought.

That's why i laugh at the face of Chinese members who claim that they can stop the flow of the Brahmaputra like India threatens Pakistan wrt the IWT.

Whats the progress on river linking my basic research says it has barely started. Just some feasibility studies and a pipeline between two rivers. It would be wiser to focus on water conservation.

That's not gonna happen. Centralisation would be bad news for india.

India's doing the war mongering for Modi's political gain. The threat from Pakistan is exaggerated. India has itself to blame for the rebellion in Kashmir.

Maybe your PM needs to see vids of desperate Indians fighting for water at tanker deliveries that happen every two weeks. From a rational prospective both countries will benefit from better relations. Your leaders are heading in the wrong direction. Civil order could break down if your people don't have water and food. Rafale's aren't gonna help you with that.
