India has the potential, it just needs to realize it. However, a major constraint is the price of oil. India is developing at a time when oil prices are extremely high. China developed when oil was pretty low. Japan developed when oil was cheaper than water. The cheaper the oil at time of development, faster development is.

Since both India and PRC was formed, in last six decades most of the time India had higher per capita income than China. Just because they took some early decisions before India regarding reforms. China crossed the $2 trillion GDP in 2005, seven years before India. But due to economic slow down India doing it in 2012.
