India's Selective Rage Over Corruption

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/18/world/asia/18iht-letter18.html

The best thing about Indian politicians is that they make you feel you are a better person. Not surprisingly, Indians often derive their moral confidence not through the discomfort of examining their own actions, but from regarding themselves as decent folks looted by corrupt, villainous politicians.

This is at the heart of a self-righteous middle-class uprising against political corruption, a television news drama that reached its inevitable climax in Delhi on Tuesday when the rural social reformer Anna Hazare was about to set out for his death fast — the second one he has attempted this year to press his demand for a powerful anti-corruption agency

The anti-corruption movement has the simplicity of a third-rate fable.

There are the good guys (the reformers and the average Indian citizen) and the bad guys (the politicians). But the real story is not a fable but art cinema.

Most Indians have paid a bribe. Most Indian businesses cannot survive or remain competitive without stashing away undeclared earnings.

Almost everybody who has sold a house has taken one part of the payment in cash and evaded tax on it.

Yet, the branding of corruption is so powerful that Indians moan the moment they hear the word. The comic hypocrisy of it all was best evident in the past few months as the anti-corruption movement gathered unprecedented middle-class support.

this is just to show the mirror.Do we, the Indian middle class, see the corruption within us.
the indian middle class likes to believe that the all are problems are due to some one else . plain and simple .

When the head is rotten, the body will automatically rot. This was a wise saying some days back. Moral of the story for all Indians: So get a healthy head and body will automatically realize what is good for it. Get it? :D

Yes, indian middle class paid bribe. But, those middle class people are not willingfully paying it, but forced to pay bribe.
There are few individuals who fight against it, but lost the fight because of enormous power of government offiicials and lack of support. Right now affected prople are gathering to fight against the corrupted people. What is wrong if those who are affected by corrupted people are gathering togather to fight against it?

Do you mean, people who has not other way, but forced to pay bribe should not fight against it? If you think like that, what is the answer? People will be forced to pay bribe for ever and nobody should rise their voice because they paid a bribe? There is something wrong in your logic.

Nobody likes to pay bribes for the services that they are entitled to. They are forced to do so.

Almost everybody who has sold a house has taken one part of the payment in cash and evaded tax on it.
True but pls also remember that when it comes to constructing house you will have pay bribes to different Govt depts even before a single brick is laid and go on doing it until the local authority inspects the house to give approval. So who can blame the owner if he decides to take some money from the buyer 'off the record'.

Bullshit the system is so corrupt that you cannot create a coruption free environment. You cannot blame citizens because in order to get simple things done, you have to engage in such practices. Who are you going to complain to?

congress is corrupt and nepotistic Nehru-Gandhi family gets voted everytime because of muslim vote bank and appeasing minorities with there pseudo-secular policies, they don't develop India because if the people get smart and literate then they won't vote for them anymore i mean seriously what a clever way to get votes your last name is the last name of the father of the nation you are heavily involved in politics the poor malnourished illiterate indian will think he is voting for a descendant of Mahatma Gandhi this is why we need BJP in power

my cabinet would be

PM: Modi (or Nitish Kumar)
Deputy PM: Advani
President Swaraj
HM: Jaitley
Defense Minister: PV Naik
MEA Ravi Shankar Prasad
FM: Yashwant Sinha
Development Minister: Nitish Kumar (or NaMo)

I don't think changing specific people in the Indian system will work. The only way is a total purge of the old system, and a new government. The Maoists may be violent, but they are right in 1 sense - trying to work within the system will just lead to more bribe paying.

You think Congress and BJP actually hate each other? No way! They're still fking girls, stealing cash, swiss bank accounts, BMW, vacations to australia and playing golf together after their "acts" on TV.

Not really mate. Maoists will just make India China of 1950s. India will loose economic boom and everything will have to start from scratch. And I don't think Communism will change much? Just look at China even after Communism there's still so much corruption in China.

You have no idea about Maoists ! They are not fighting for "free of poverty , justice for all " kind of Utopia ! They are just power hungry sadists. They main goal is to overthrow democratic goverment and run a autocracy like Burma to satisfy their insatiable appetite for power, and evetually break India into pieces ! Why do you think they get support from across the border from our neighbors !!

I am not saying that Maoists should take power, but the current system in India is already broken. Time to shuffle the cards, you know? Maybe not specifically to Maoists. Aren't there also far right Hindu nationalist parties?

guys whether its BJP or CONgress both have corrupt politicians in them generally speaking 90% of our politicians are corrupt and have apathy for development and betterment for the poor the BJP and the Karnataka mining scam the CONgress party with countless scandals this proves my point

the BJP screaming in Parliament and not allowing anything to be done is not helping the situation the congress party bickering over Anna Hazare baba ramdev etc is not helping either the system is dysfunctional and must be reformed we need reforms i propose a reformation of the constitution as well, removal of red tape and the backward socialist policies that Nehru put forth in the 50/60's etc all of it to be gone our public sector in one word is a nightmare

bottom line 90% of India's politicians are arseholes and idiots whether its Congress or BJP but Congress is much worse the BJP actually develops impoverished areas take a look at Bihar Gujarat and Punjab BJP is best choice for India

In India the whole system has change & first and foremost it should start with the changing of mindset of the people. Unfortunately most people who claim to be honest would be the ones who did not get an opportunity to take bribes. Taking & giving bribes have become a way of life...think of anything...buying a house...starting a business venture...getting admission in an educational institution..pick anything...you always keep some money aside for miscellaneous expenses (read: giving bribes)...
