The Planning Commission today said poverty in India declined 7.3 percentage points to 29.8 per cent of the population over five years to 2009-10.

Poverty in rural areas declined at a faster pace than in urban cities between 2004-05 and 2009-10, according to the Planning Commission estimates released today.

The total number of poor in the country has been estimated at 34.47 crore in 2009-10, as against 40.72 crore in 2004-05.

"The all India head count (HCR) ratio has declined by 7.3 percentage points from 37.2 per cent in 2004-05 to 29.8 per cent in 2009-10, with rural poverty declining by 8 percentage points from 41.8 per cent to 33.8 per cent and urban poverty declining by 4.8 percentage point form 25.7 per cent to 20.9 per cent," said an official statement.

The sharp decline in poverty of over 10 percentage points was witnessed in Himchal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttarakhand.

The data revealed that the poverty has increased in North-eastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland, the statement said.

Some of the bigger states, such as Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh have shown only marginal decline in poverty ratio, particularly in rural areas.

Surprised to see Bihar performing bad in poverty reduction. I thought Bihar is doing well under Nitish Kumar leadership.

Good for up is that mayawati is gone and hope new regime make things better

Have you heard that Raja Bhaiya is now incharge of Jail....Good for all SP working lashing in Jail.... and bad for BSP workers.

NE and Bihar need to get their act together.

friend the data is for the 5 years between 2004-05 to 2009-10. the Nitish Kumar government is doing fine.
its not a magic wand to make poverty vanish in a couple of years. you will start seeing the results at the end of this decade.

Patna: The economy of Bihar grew at an annual rate of 11.36 per cent from 2004-05 to 2010-11 showing a revival of a stagnant economy of the state, Deputy Chief Minister S K Modi said on Wednesday.

The growth rate of the state economy in 2010-11 was 14.8 per cent comparing to that in 2009-10, Modi, who holds the finance portfolio, told reporters after tabling the economic survey for 2011-12 in the state assembly.

We should be focusing on NE areas - If poverty rises in these areas then people will be more inclined to join the naxals and maoists.
This zone + J&K should have number one priority in all poverty alleviation plans

7.3 % of 1.2 billion = 0.0876 billion = 87.6 miilion (to get perspective Pakistan's population is ~180 million)

Thats outstanding man, we have elevated population in miilions out of poverty, 87 000 000. (half of Pakistan' s entire population)

But we need more speed, Godspeed, to bring poverty level below 15%.

Moral of story: We need more reforms, more FDI, more infrastructure, more manufacturing industries and more human development index.

The main areas - the NE has shown an increment .. That's very bad coz separatists , naxals are pretty active there ..
Central government should allot more funds to the NE to alleviate poverty .

The infra connecting NE to the rest of India is pretty **** .. First we will have to improve that to increase trade

North East is a tricky situation. The poverty is on the rise cause of illegal immigration. The first thing Illegal Migrants do is "buy" a BPL card through dodgy means. And that puts them on the on the list of people bpl.

If only our fcking government would think about national interest rather than their votebank:hitwall:

The only thing which satisfies indians ego is to compare india with Pakistan no matter how & where u compare... lol

nyways on a serious note thts good tht poverty level in india is getting down the biggest problem for the whole world is to feed millions of hungry indians the biggest problem for humanity & even more severe thn Africa, & instead of increasing defence budget & becoming the biggest arms importer in the world GoI should divert more resources on poors.
