Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, during his visit to New Delhi on Wednesday, backed India and Brazil to be permanent members of the UNSC.

In his reply on Thursday, Geng said reform of the UNSC is very important as it concerns the long-term development of the UN and interests of all members.

China on Thursday played down Russia’s backing for India and Brazil’s entry into the UN Security Council as permanent member, saying all parties have “major differences” in the matter and instead advocated for a “package solution”.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, during his visit to New Delhi on Wednesday, backed India and Brazil to be permanent members of the UNSC. “We are convinced that the overriding trend of the global development is the objective process of the formation of new centres of economic might, financial power and political influence and India is obviously one of them,” Lavrov said.

Reacting to Lavrov’s statement, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said member countries of the UN have differences over reforms in the world body. China, which has veto power in the UNSC being one of its five permanent members, has been stonewalling India’s efforts to become permanent member of the powerful UN body for years, pointing out lack of consensus even though the other four — US, UK, France and Russia — have backed New Delhi’s membership.

Beijing’s all weather ally, Pakistan, is also opposed to India becoming a permanent member. India, Germany, Brazil and Japan have formed the G4 bloc to press for their permanent membership demand as part of the reforms in the United Nations.

China however has backed India for non-permanent membership of the UNSC for the year 2021-22.
In his reply on Thursday, Geng said reform of the UNSC is very important as it concerns the long-term development of the UN and interests of all members.

“Now all parties have major differences on this and we do not have broad consensus on the reform. So, China would like to work with other members to find a package solution that accommodates the interests and concerns of all parties through dialogue and consultation,” he said.

He said the UNSC is the core of international collective security mechanism and any reform to better implement its duty enshrined in the UN charter and the reform should enhance the representation and say of developing countries, so that more medium sized and small sized countries can participate in the decision-making process of the security council, he said.

Its all BS, none of the 5 members want new members, its a dilution of power and something that can be used against them. the foreign ministers from russia and other countries say all sorts of things, but there are no real intentions, its all words to grease the wheels for other deals, and make the indians feel good about themselves, the words are largely worthless.

Lol. Then why not China call them out by just backing India's bid. All others have publicly supported our bid.

So if China, the only one of P-5 opposes the expansion, agrees, what will happen?

If India gets a permanent membership then we need a permanent membership for a Muslim country or OIC. a permanent membership for African Union aswell.

Do we matter?

Correct. Russians know that China will never allow India in so they are just playing with India. They are scoring two objectives with one stone.

1. Russians know that China will veto any Indian attempts to get in so they(russians) don't have to veto it herself and earn indians anger.
2. By encouraging India , they are trying to fool indians into believing that somehow russians are in their favor outwardly.

That sounds pretty evil...

if you scroll below, you will see other Indian users have posted similar threads before with "China says will back India for UN Security Council permanent membership", and now it looks like the chinese are saying something else.. what you need to understand is its all BS, these gestures are common, everytime a foreign minister visits Delhi, they discuss deals and initiatives, and the Indians request, and the foreign minister knowing full well that his country has no intention of following through, and the unlikeliness of such a thing ever happening, happily complies, as he wants to grease the wheels to whatever deal he has made during his time there.

Its in none of the interests of the 5 permanent members to dilute their veto power. from the US side, it holds a majority with 3 of the 5 functioning in the same geopolitical bloc, there could be resolutions tomorrow that it wants to introduce that doesnt concern the russians or the chinese, that might pass, but the indians could veto it, why even create such a situation. China similarly could introduce a resolution, and have the indians bloc, b/c relations between the countries are bad. The russians, why would they wish to give up their leverage over the Indians, say a resolution gets introduced, and India wants to block it, it no longer needs Russia to block it and it can block it unilaterally, thats a loss of leverage. but not expanding, Russia ensures an Indian dependency on it, to protect it in the UNSC.

This pretty much sums up Russia's role; and India's global standing

The UNSC itself needs to be completely sacked. How can a few countries decide the fate of many is stupid.

Pakistan should press for Permanent member of UNSC

Pakistan should press to actually become sovereign and not being so heavily dependent and functioning as a client state. the thoughts of a UNSC seat is a very far sort of thing. Its like a homeless guy living in a cardboard box, and then thinking, hmm... Maybe I should go and buy a Yacht for the swimming pool in my imaginary palace..
