India's new 2,800 MW nuclear power plant in Haryana; work to start from tomorrow

The work to set up nuclear power plant at Gorakhpur village in Haryana's Fatehabad district would commence tomorrow.

The work of the power plant, which had seen vociferous protests from farmers in the past, will begin in the presence of officers of Fatehabad district administration, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and farmers of Gorakhpur village.

In the first phase, topographic survey and soil studies would be conducted.

A meeting to chalk out the works to be carried out for setting up this plant was held today at Fatehabad.

Haryana's Chief Parliamentary Secretary Prahalad Singh Gillankhera, Deputy Commissioner Fatehabad, M L Kaushik, Chief Project Engineer, NPCIL, T R Arora, and some farmers attended the meeting, an official spokesman said here.

In the first phase, NPCIL would start the process of topographic survey and soil studies.

Besides, survey work of tubewells, kachha houses, hand pumps, trees, gardens and underground pipeline belonging to farmers would start from September 10 for which a team consisting of Sub Divisional Magistrate and other officials had been constituted.

This team would submit its report by September 25 to the district administration so as to provide early compensation to farmers.

A spokesman said Haryana CPS Gillankhera assured farmers that all their demands regarding development of village would be fulfilled by the district administration, NPCIL and state government.

The Haryana CPS said villagers of Gorakhpur had created history by giving up their land for this nuclear power project. "They have become partners in development," :tup:he said.

Most of the farmer protests for land acquisitions are only because of the low value the Govts give while acquiring their lands. The rate is susually 1/5th of the market value in many places. But I heard in Punjab and Haryana the Govt actually offers more than the actual market value and hence people give up their lands without as much protests. Hope for speedy completeion of projects Govts in rest of country too follow this policy, because in the long run, this will actually save money.

2,800 MW is quite something!! Despite all the interference of foreign-backed NGOs India's nuclear power generation capabilities are coming on very well at this rate it is very much on target to meet the goal of 100% (+surplus) power generation capacity by 2022.

Good on you India-forging ahead, bringing ever more light to a region in darkness.

And New Delhi is about 200 KM away.

And?? New Delhi is a MEGACITY whose power needs increase daily. Having nuke reactors a huge distance away in "safe" locations is plain stupid as mammoth quantities of electricity will be lost over the distance. This idea is econimcially nonviable.

Anyone know the status of the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project??

Its better to have nuclear than other plant. Anti nuclear activists shoooooooooooooooooooooooooo
