India's Muslims fear for their future under Narendra Modi

Don't be silly. How many posts can you find in pdf that does not mention India ?

Its the standard response whenever pakistani's re-discover the mess in pakistan.

They immediately open a "Thank you Jinnah" thread.

Maybe its Canadian people who want to wish your Diwali Mubarak man.

Pakistanis are busy with Imran Khan and do not even care that India has imposed a war on them.

Yeah, its always "diwali ki shubhkamnaye" when you are wishing Hindus.

But when your wishes are written by a punjabi with a pakistani hangover, they slip in a "mubarak"

I think threads like this are a tribute to Imran Khan's efforts. :D ........ the more mess he creates, the more "Thank you jinnah" threads will appear.

Its like the chinese posting about "caste", "rape", "toilet" whenever we mention Uighur

Standard knee jerk response, to standard issues. Its quite fun and comic really. lol.

you are highly mistaken but we can agree to disagree.

Are you satisfied by state of affairs in Pakistan?

I am actually, the country is going through the necessary reforms required to eliminate this culture of subsidies and rent seeking. There is off course short term pain required to reverse the failures of the last 10 years, but i am confident these mechanism will result in stabilization of the country for the long term.

Indian Muslims are patriotic Indians. The same cannot be said about Pakistani Muslims and Pakistan.

That's a blanket statement my friend. You're on a Pakistani Forum, feel free to create a poll and see how patriot we Pakistanis are.

With an increase in hate crimes against Muslims in India in recent years, some fear the world's largest democracy is becoming dangerously intolerant under the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BBC's Rajini Vaidyanathan reports.

It happened just days before the first phase of voting in the Indian elections.

A Muslim trader in the north-eastern state of Assam was leaving work when he was accosted by a mob.

Shaukat Ali was surrounded by the group, forced to kneel in sludge as he was attacked.

"Are you Bangladeshi?" one man shouted, questioning his Indian citizenship.

"Why did you sell beef here?" asked another as he jabbed his finger at Mr Ali.

Instead of stepping in to help, the crowds that gathered filmed the incident on their mobile phones.

'An attack on my entire faith'
A month later and Mr Ali is still struggling to walk. I met him at his home, a short drive from the market, surrounded by lush verdant countryside and rice fields.

As the 48-year-old sat cross-legged on his bed, his eyes filled with tears as he recounted the horror of what happened.

"They beat me with a stick, they kicked me in the face," he said, showing me the injuries to his rib cage and his head.

For decades his family have served beef curry from their small food stall - but never before had they faced such trouble. Some states have made it illegal to sell beef because Hindus consider the cow sacred - but it is legal to sell it in Assam.

Shaukat Ali wasn't just injured physically - he was stripped of his dignity. The mob made the devout Muslim to eat pork, forcing him to chew it and then gulp it down.

"I have no reason to live now, " he said as he broke down, "This was an attack on my entire faith."

On the day we met, dozens of members of the local Muslim community had gathered at his house to check on Mr Ali. As they listened to his story, some started to cry as they wondered if they were now vulnerable too.

Image captionVillagers came to support Mr Ali after the incident
As the world's largest democracy goes to the polls, questions are being raised about how inclusive India is to its large Muslim minority population of 172 million.

Shaukat Ali is the latest victim of an increasing number of attacks perpetrated on those selling, or suspected of selling beef.

A February 2019 report from Human Rights Watch found that between May 2015 and December 2018, at least 44 people - 36 of them Muslims - were killed across 12 Indian states. Around 280 people were injured in more than 100 incidents across 20 states over the same period.

In her annual report, United Nations Human Rights chief Michelle Bachelet raised concerns over "increasing harassment and targeting of minorities - in particular, Muslims and people from historically disadvantaged and marginalised groups, such as Dalits (formerly known as untouchables)."

Religious violence claiming victims of all faiths has been an unwelcome mainstay of this country's history since its inception.

But there's real concern that those who wield power in today's India are embracing a culture of impunity.

One of the most chilling examples was what happened in the aftermath of one of the most gruesome gang rapes in India in recent years.

In January last year, an eight-year-old Muslim girl was taking the family's horses to graze, when she was kidnapped in Kathua district in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Held captive for a week in a Hindu temple, she was drugged and repeatedly gang raped and tortured before she was murdered.

A police report filed afterwards said the crime was part of a plan by a group of Hindu men to drive the nomadic Muslim Bakerwal community that she belonged to, away from the area.

More than a year on, a policeman stands guard outside her family home in a remote part of Kathua, hidden at the end of a long and bumpy dirt track.

"They said this is the daughter of a Muslim, kill her and they'll get scared and run away," her father told me as he wiped tears from his eyes.

Image captionThe video of Mr Ali being forced to eat pork went viral, sparking outrage
Her parents refuse to give up the home their little girl once lived in, but they're concerned about their safety.

"We're scared to go out now as we fear for our lives," her mother said. "If we step out, people swear at us and threaten to beat us."

In the aftermath of the eight-year-old girl's death, hundreds took to the streets and marched. But many of the local protests were in support of the eight Hindu men charged with the gruesome attack, and not in solidarity with the victim and her family.

Two BJP ministers serving in the state government, Chaudhary Lal Singh and Chander Prakash Ganga, were among those who took to the streets to support the alleged perpetrators.

"This one girl has died and there is so much of investigation. There have been many deaths of women here," Mr Singh reportedly told a rally at the time.

While Mr Modi condemned the rape, he didn't call for the men to resign immediately. It took weeks of pressure for them to step down.

According to reports, the BJP's general secretary Ram Madhav continued to defend the men.

"The party did not want Mr Ganga and Mr Singh to step down. They resigned because media created an impression that they were supporting the rape accused," he said.

This wasn't an isolated case. There have been several instances where members of the BJP party have openly supported the perpetrators of religious violence, showing a blatant disregard for those who have suffered.

The party espouses a Hindu nationalist ideology and some of its senior figures call for a Hindu state. But party leaders have repeatedly stressed that they are not anti-minority.

Image captionBJP president Amit Shah has referred to illegal Muslim immigrants as "termites" at rallies
A group of men accused of beating 50-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq to death with bricks in 2015 because they suspected him of killing a cow, were spotted at an election rally held by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The controversial BJP politician, who was recently ordered by India's election commission to suspend campaigning for a few days last month over his anti-Islam rhetoric, often shares the stage with Mr Modi.

Most recently, Jayant Sinha, the civil aviation minister who sits in Mr Modi's cabinet, told the BBC that he had funded the legal fees for a group of men who were given the death penalty for killing a Muslim cattle trader in 2017.

In an interview with BBC Hindi's Jugal Purohit, Mr Sinha said he helped theconvicts, who were BJP members, because he believed they were wrongly convicted.

Leading writer and political activist Arundhati Roy, who has been a vocal critic of the BJP government, describes these sort of actions as "an outsourcing of terror", arguing that vigilante groups are able to carry out such crimes because they are protected from above.

"It's not just the leaders that we have to look to. What is happening to the mind of people who are constantly being fed this sort of hatred - to call that kind of poison back is going to be hard, " she told me.

But BJP spokesman Nalin Kohli rejects any assertion that his party's policies have contributed to a rise in hate crime. He accused the UN and human rights reports of "skewing statistics to build up a narrative that does not exist".

Mr Kohli stressed that under a Modi government, the BJP has provided welfare which has led to the development of people of all faiths. The party is for all 1.3 billion Indians, and does not discriminate based on religion, he said.

Media captionIndia's elections: Why you should care
But as India goes to the polls, some fear that a second BJP term could bring this country closer to a majoritarian state.

One of the party's manifesto pledges is to remove all illegal Bangladeshi immigrants who are living in India.

The party has promised an amnesty for some - Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, Christians, Parsis and Jains - but Muslims are notably excluded.

At campaign rallies, BJP president Amit Shah refers to these immigrants as "termites" and "infiltrators", drawing scorn from many quarters.

In the district of Goalpara in Assam, a group of villagers are seated in a circle on plastic chairs.

Many are holding pieces of paper with photos of their family members on it.

Last year, people across this state were asked to present documentation of their family trees and prove that they're Indian. In this case, having the documentation to prove they entered Assam before 24 March 1971 - a day before neighbouring Bangladesh declared independence.

Ufaan, a mother of four, unfolds a piece of paper. On the top is a photo of her husband who died last year, and below him are the faces of her young boys.

Her family was born in India, but none of them ended up on the government's National Register of Citizens (NRC). Four million residents - many of them Muslims- didn't make the list either.

_106967424_5.jpg

Image captionA young boy holds up his documentation papers in Assam state
Ufaan is terrified this means she might be thrown out of the only country she calls home.

Sitting close by is Mohammed Samsul, who is also living on edge. He tells me his grandfather and father were born in Assam and both appeared on the register. He says even though he has all the paperwork, he's not appeared on the NRC register.

"We're living in constant fear. I'm scared the police will come at night and take our family away to a refugee camp."

The BJP maintains their policy is only aimed at illegal immigrants, but there are real fears it could be used to throw out any Muslims.

India's strength lies in its diversity. The right for all religions to co-exist is enshrined in this country's constitution. But many fear the current political climate is compromising that basic secular principle.

India's Modi faces backlash for backing terror accused candidate

BHOPAL, India (Reuters) - For nearly a decade, Pragya Thakur was known mostly as the saffron-clad Hindu ascetic shuttling in and out of Indian courts, flanked by police, facing charges under an anti-terrorism law for plotting a bomb attack on Muslims.

Last month, the 49-year-old was fielded as a candidate by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the current general election, in which he is seeking a second term.

Overnight, Thakur, who has been out on bail since 2017, emerged as a symbol of a Hindu nationalist movement that is showing increasing intolerance toward Muslims in the Hindu-dominated nation.

The five years of Modi’s rule have seen an increasing number of attacks on Muslims by right-wing groups. But the brazenness of Thakur’s candidacy has still stunned many.

It’s the first time a leading political party in India has fielded a candidate accused of terrorism in an election.

“They are addressing a very extreme form of the Hindutva fold,” said Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay, a New Delhi-based biographer of Modi, referring to the BJP’s Hindu-first ideology.

Thakur says she had nothing to do with the 2008 explosion near several mosques in the Muslim-majority town of Malegaon in western India. Six Muslims were killed and more than a hundred people injured. According to court filings, the motorcycle on which the explosives were strapped was Thakur’s, and she was among those who planned the attack to avenge “jihadi activities.”

Indian law allows candidates charged with crimes to contest elections, but not convicts. The trial against Thakur started in December but a final verdict is not expected anytime soon.

Modi and BJP leaders have come out strongly in defense of her candidature.

BJP President Amit Shah told a television channel last month that Thakur was given a ticket to contest “so that the whole world can know that these accusations against her were fabricated”.

DEFENDS GANDHI’S KILLER
The BJP argues there is no such thing as a Hindu terrorist, and portrays charges against her as an affront to all Hindus.

“You are saying that a saffron-clad person is a terrorist? What is this?” said Prabhat Jha, the BJP’s national vice president in central India’s Bhopal city, where Thakur is contesting. He was referring to the robes worn by Hindu ascetics.

Voting in Bhopal was on May 12, and results are due on May 23.

Thakur stirred fresh controversy on Thursday when she called the right-wing Hindu, Nathuram Godse, who killed India’s independence hero Mohandas “Mahatma” Gandhi in 1948, a patriot. “Those who call him a terrorist should look within. This election will deliver a fitting reply to such people,” she said.

The BJP quickly distanced itself from the comments and Thakur later apologized.

“Whatever has been said about Gandhiji or Godse (Nathuram Godse), it’s terrible,” Modi said in a television interview on Friday.

“In a civilized society, this kind of language and thinking does not work... I cannot forgive her.”

Thakur declined to be interviewed for this story. According to her family and supporters, she is a pious nationalist and champion of women’s rights who was a former youth politics leader known for fiery speeches.

Born in a village in central India, she grew up to become a leader of a youth group linked to the BJP, and usually clad in a shirt and jeans, hair cropped short, came to be referred to as “didi”, or elder sister, her sister Upma said.

Former members of the youth group said Thakur was known then as a “dabang”, or daredevil, not afraid to pick a fight. One said she would carry a “katta” - a locally-made pistol – although others said there was no proof.

Days after gaining the candidacy, Thakur boasted about her role in demolishing a 16th century mosque in the northern Ayodhya city in 1992 – an event that sparked some of India’s deadliest communal riots.

“I was there, I had broken the structure, and I will go back to build the temple,” Thakur said in a campaign speech, echoing BJP’s promise to build a temple at the mosque site.

TORTURE CLAIMS
Thakur, whose family says she is a cancer survivor, has often wept while describing the torture she claims she endured in custody.

But the Supreme Court said in 2011 it found no merit in her allegations. The National Human Rights Commission said in 2015 her claims “were not substantiated by facts”.

Her media relations head, Hitesh Bajpai, said there was proof she was tortured, but declined to elaborate.

Thakur’s supporters expressed deep empathy.

“A woman who has suffered such torture, she will understand our issues more than anyone else,” said Saumya Srivastava, a 46-year-old housewife, at a recent rally.

About 500 km (300 miles) west of Bhopal, in Malegaon, there was anger among families of blast victims about Thakur’s candidacy.

The Supreme Court rejected a petition to bar her from contesting the election that was filed by Nisar Ahmed, whose 20-year-old son Syed Azhar was killed in the blast.

“My son was killed in the attack, and today a prime accused in that is standing in an election,” said Ahmed. “Is this how they give us justice?”

In Bhopal, Thakur folded her hands to greet supporters one evening before heading out for a roadshow, a traditional vermillion mark fresh on her forehead. A devotee fed her sweets and lowered her head to seek blessings - to which Thakur warmly responded by placing a hand on the woman’s head.

Chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” (Long Live Mother India) filled the air, as her cavalcade disappeared around a street corner.

Just thought i start this topic. It appears things are about to get a lot worse for Indian Muslims then they were in the past. Muslims are being openly assaulted, and their religion is being targeted by the Hindu Majority especially with BJP and RSS in power. I mean, Modi is openly fielding a candidate who is considered a terrorist and responsible for the deaths of Muslims.

Thought i post these links for my fellow Pakistanis to remember, that no matter how bad things might be for us in Pakistan, they are not nearly as bad as they are for Indian Muslims.
Muslims have Pakistan and Bangladesh where they play the dominant part. I think in India Hindus should dominate and modi is the perfect Hindu leader.

You do realize that there are more than a few people who actually say terrorism in Pakistan is because of Objective Resolution and then the other side says Pakistanis do not follow Islam and are illiterate and etc..

Please man let India be. It has its own date with destiny and that has nothing to do with Pakistan and Pakistani Muslims.

Sorry if i was harsh.

And your point is? How does that make Pakistanis less patriots, which was an absolute and blanket statement.

I agree, and that's why i opened this thread under 'South Asia' section and not 'Pakistan'.

Not at all, and sorry for calling you out.

go to IMF and see what reforms they are planning for Pakistan

Political, ethnocentrism, religious bigotry is rampant in Pakistan which should be our priority and not some random mob in India.

In India muslims have the highest crime rate more prominently female related crimes. Some days ago a Delhi based man was killed by a Muslim boy when he tried to defend his daughter from being teased/stalked by the Muslim boy. In India Hindu boys never tease or sexually abused any Muslim girl but Muslims have always harrassed/stalked Hindu girls and it's a fact.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.ndtv.com/delhi-news/delhi-man-killed-for-protesting-daughters-harassment-locals-made-videos-2037552?amp=1&akamai-rum=off

This is not a new thing. Hindu girls have always been fair game for muslim men in the sub continent.

E.g. 1.

Hindu minor girl was abducted by father of two kids Meraj Khan, she was rescued by local public later. Mob of his community protested his arrest.

E.g. 2.

Hindu married women gangraped by Muhammad Samir, Muhammad Saqib & Sohail

E.g. 3.

Muslim men barges into the home of Dalit Hindu girl , tear her clothes, molest her & break head of her sister

All of this in the last 3 days

This is their behavior when they claim to be in "fear for their future". Now imagine them without this fear.

No wait, you don't even have to imagine it. Just take a good look at pakistan.

.
lol..... recycling the same propaganda stories might make you feel good. But nothing more.

The 37 deaths at hands of the cow gang are real though, its difficult to put that kind of behaviour aside

Also the little girl who was raped and then BJP party try to get the accused off charges.

I know some things might be exagerrated but some humility and understanding by Indian elite would help? Ignoring it is as problematic as ignoring Jihadist is Islam etc

Those 37 dead at the hands of Vigilantes were cow thief and smugglers. Ever wonder why all of them are muslims ?

A far greater number of Hindus are killed by these cow thiefs every year. Don't see you crying for them

This is just a partial list reported in the Media. Countless number of Hindus are killed in rural India without any reports in the Media

  • February 7, 2014:
Cattle smugglers kill two villagers in Bareilly. Report says, "Residents alleged that this is not an isolated case as several unsuccessful attempts in the past have been thwarted by alert villagers who raised an alarm, forcing the gang to flee."
  • May 1, 2014: Cattle smugglers fire at villagers and police after being caught in Gurgaon's Baliawas. Later nabbed by police and identified as Aabid and Umar.
  • June 24, 2014: Cattle smugglers fire at a farmer after he catches them stealing his cows in Shahjahanpur in UP.
  • February 20, 2015: Cattle smugglers kill two policemen, including a head constable in Mathura, UP, when the police tried to intercept a vehicle carrying cows near Azizpur village.

  • June 1, 2016: A 16-year-old girl was shot dead by cow thieves after she confronted them. The incident happened in Etah district of Agra
  • June 6, 2016: Two men kill a chowkidar Data Ram after suspecting him to be a police informer on cow slaughter incidents in Lucknow's Azamgarh district. The accused were later identified as Jakib and Itikar.
  • June 19, 2016: Cattle smugglers ran over and killed a Dalit man in Agra's Firozabad district when he tried to stop them from stealing his cattle.
  • August 5, 2016: Cattle smugglers drive a pick-up van over a 56-year-old constable named Triloki Tiwari in Jaunpur, UP.
  • October 22, 2016: Cattle smugglers opened fire at a dairy farmer in Panipat, Haryana after he catches them red-handed.
  • November 2, 2016: Cattle smugglers shot dead a woman after being caught stealing her buffaloes. The incident took place in Asrauli village of Dehat kotwali area of UP's Etah district.
  • June 25, 2017: Cattle smugglers tried to run over a vehicle at police "yet again" in Shajahanpur. One of the accused was identified as Ehsaan.
  • July 2, 2017: A farmer Charan Singh was shot dead by armed cattle thievesafter he tried to save his buffalo from them. The incident took place in Kotrekapura village of Agra.

Every year almost 1000 policemen and BSF are killed by these same cow thief and smugglers. Don't see your tears for them.

I guess you only cry for muslim criminals.

.
@jamahir

What is your worthy opinion on this? Some say this is just exaggerated propaganda by Congress to cater Muslim votes?

Thank you for cherished opinion.

i have an understanding with him. As long as he says otherwise, i believe everything is shining in incredible india for Muslims.

While the background bureaucracy of India remains secular because of the legacy of Nehru and co., there is no doubt that the Hindutva right-wingers have become prominent in the last ten years or so. One example is the assassination of the progressive, Narendra Dabolkar, in 2013 - ten months before the BJP formed government at the center.

@Gadkari , let us remember that the Kathua case of Asifa's murder by gang rape and torture also went in the wrong direction with some people in Jammu, instead speaking against the crime, they spoke only of raising funds for the families of the criminals involved of the case. And there were a few Indian PDF members who also spoke this way.

I hope that whoever forms the next government, the country's bureaucratic secularism remains primary and the current anti-Dalit and anti-Muslim poison peters away.

India's current mess explains why the British system of "Parliamentary Democracy" - which India has - can bring in a wrong group into power.
