India’s homegrown missile interception system failed to shoot down an incoming missile during a test Monday, a Defense Ministry official said.

A medium-range and nuclear-capable Prithvi II surface-to-surface missile was fired from a test site in the eastern state of Orissa, but the interceptor missile failed to take off due to a technical snag, the official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.

Other details were not available. The test was believed to be routine and part of an ongoing series of trials.

Nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan usually notify each other ahead of major missile tests, in keeping with an agreement between the two nations.

It was not immediately known whether India informed Pakistan about Monday’s test. India and Pakistan have fought three wars since they gained independence from Britain in 1947.

“It would undergo several more tests before the design is technologically confirmed,” said Rahul Bedi, a South Asia analyst with London-based Jane’s Defense Weekly.

The system is part of an anti-ballistic sheet that would provide protection against incoming missiles, Bedi told The Associated Press.

“The level of errors in this game is very high. It’s important because basically it is aimedas a defensive measure against nuclear rivals China and Pakistan,” he said.

BHUBANESWAR, India — India's homegrown interceptor defence shield developed to detect and destroy incoming ballistic missiles failed during a test on Monday, military officials said.

The test was abandoned when the radars following the target, a nuclear-capable missile, lost track of it after it blasted off from a site 200 kilometres (120 miles) from Bhubaneswar in eastern India.

"The 'hostile' missile went off the radars after it took off and deviated from its trajectory and so the interceptor was not launched," an official from Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said, asking not to be named.

DRDO spokesman Ravi Gupta in New Delhi confirmed the seven-metre (23-foot foot) interceptor missile was not launched during Monday's botched test.

India would join Israel, Russia and the United States in developing and possessing such technology if it is rolled out per schedule this year.

The system's tracking and fire control radars have been developed by the DRDO jointly with Israel and France.

Last month, India announced it would test a nuclear-capable missile with a range of over 5,000 kilometres within a year.

India's current longest-range nuclear-capable missile, Agni-III, can travel 3,500 kilometres.

Nuclear-armed Pakistan, with which India has fought three wars since their independence six decades ago, has said India's missile programme could trigger a new arms race in the region.

Dear, go and read what he wrote.... he very well mentioned Tech... India has technology and is working in this missile, several tests have passed... but pakistan dosent have these technologies at all, and Just Claims it superior in missile technology... Any ways he is not the true owner of those lines, he copied it from my post posted in a thread stating pakistan was 3rd best in missile technology, those lines suited the context of that thread, wonder what made him post here...

on march 6,2009...the PAD system was tested successfully....
On 6 December 2007 the Advanced Air Defence (AAD) missile system was tested successfully....

Not only is your reasoning devoid of basic common sense, it also seems to be handicapped of the understanding of the basic laws of Physics.

Any projectile followes a trijectory to reach a point and this trijectory is set depending on the initial factors, so the trijectory of any projectile can be very easily be mapped once its launch and other basic parameters have been tracked by a radar.

This logic is not unique to the Indian ABM programme, its basic Physics and applies to all other ABM programmes.

That's only true for non-maneuver missile..There're ballistic missiles that doesn't need to fly ballistic trajectories today..lol The test was staged for success. The missiles were align to hit each other, but one went crazy the other couldn't fire...That was what happen.

Why the US THAAD fails when tested against a missile moving a little faster than the scuds that they usually tested with..lol
