India's Mars Mission: first look

.
PDF's special correspondent @ISRO222 will be reporting the incident live from Mars with his martian friends!

This should answer some of your questions.

Liftoff mass: 1350 kg
Dry mass: 500 kg.

Thanks. That clarifies it for me. I was thinking a 1350kg satellite would have been too heavy for PSLV-C20 unless it was modified for this mission. I think the size of the solar panels tells me this babe is there to stay:cool: We all know how long the two American Mars rovers have lived on their solar panels. With no dust in space they should last even longer.

Are you really a Chinese ?? I can't believe what my eyes just read.

我当然是中国人!

Of course I'm a Chinese. But I'm also a space enthusiast. So on the matter of exploring Mars I'm completely on your side. Mind you though, anything you may find on Mars was probably already discovered by the Chinese. So don't claim any LOC just yet:lol:

Well I said what I said because I was truely impressed. Now the news has also shown up on Chinese media but with no pictures and details remain scarce. I'm interested in the following:
1. How heavy is the payload?
Chinese media reports 1350 kg. But it's not clear whether it is the mass of the satellite or the entire rocket payload. That begs the second question:
2. Which rocket will be used to send this babe up?
Is it PSLV-C20? Is this rocket up to task? It's one thing to send something to the moon or Earth orbit, it's entirely another to go to Mars. You will need a very powerful rocket in order to escape the Earth gravity.
3. How long is the orbitor's expected life span?
4. Is Mar's lander on ISRO's roadmap?

Once again, congrats. All the best!

Its PSLV-XL..

The task of PSLV is only to inject the spacecraft into earth orbit & then the on board propulsion systems in the satellite will take it to an interplanetary trajectory..
